White spots on tonsils, strep throat or tonsilitis?

White spots on tonsils, strep throat or tonsilitis?

Could be: White spots on the tonsils could be food particles. The only way to be sure of strep throat is a throat culture. Tonsillitis is a specific diagnosis made by a physician when the tonsils in the throat are red and enlarged and painful. Strep throat does not necessarily indicate tonsil involvement. Obviously you need an objective diagnosis by a specialist. ...Read more

2 weeks AFTER tonsil infection. Still on/off sore throat burn. GP said wait another week. Second advice? Pain goes from back to top depending on day.

Depends on doctor: Throat symptoms after a tonsil infection will vary with different types of infections and with different patients. Some doctors recheck the throat if the original symptoms don't go away within 1 week. Throat symptoms can also be due to something other than what caused the original infection. With strep throat, one can easily catch it again (but sometimes the first infection did not clear). ...Read more

Sore throat since Monday, thick mucus (yellow/green, white) splotchy looking tonsils. Could it be strep, or infection? Will it pass on its own?

Doctor can evaluate: Throat pain can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics are needed), a cold or influenza (antibiotics usually not used), or from some other cause such as allergies or irritants. Usually, a person sees the doctor if the sore throat is bothersome, recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly (mainly to check for strep throat). Sore throats often pass on their own, but antibiotics are used for strep. ...Read more

Had a throat infection. 4 months later still hav large tonsils no pain. swabbed it myself as dr dismissed me! found group a strep. Is Treatment needed?

No: Antibiotics are given to prevent Rheumatic Heart Disease(RHD), NOT to cure the sore throat. At best they may reduce the duration of symptoms by 16 hours. The incidence of Rheumatic Fever(RF) in the U.S. is one in a million cases of strep throat. Only one out of three patients with RF develop RHD. For every three million antibiotic Rx's only one case of RHD is prevented. **See my comments below: ...Read more

Symptoms of strep throat if you don't have tonsils?

Essentially the same: Strep throat is strep throat--a bacterial infection due to exposure to a specific germ called streptococcus. Headache, sore throat, red throat, swollen lymph nodes of the neck, nausea, vomiting, generalized achiness or malaise, even a fine sandpapery red rash known as scarletina can occur whether one has tonsils or not. Admittedly the chance of strep throat seems less after tonsillectectomy. ...Read more
