Yes: Yes with a negative strep test, this is most likely viral. Why are you taking antibiotics? They are not indicated for a viral sore throat, by the way. Keep hydrated and take motrin for pain are your best treatments. Feel better! I would discuss the antibiotics with whoever prescribed them! ...Read more

Excellent question: There are 2 points I wish to make. First, if you have a viral infection, placing you on an antibiotic may be harmful because you are killing off "good" bacteria in the nasopharynx. Secondly, azithromycin is not a good choice for UPPER RESPIRATORY TRACT INFECTIONS because this drug is not effective against NTHI. Finally, a rapid strep test only rules out Strep. Post nasal drip: As summer starts the allergy season is more common than a bacterial infection. Fevers, malaise, loss of appetite, painful swallowing would go along with a bacterial throat infection.
