What can I do for strep throat infection and rash all over?

Antibiotics: For significant sore throat with swollen tonsils / lymph nodes – see physician & get a strep throat test/ culture. If you have strep throat, antibiotic therapy is imperative to prevent future complications. Consider tylenol (acetaminophen) or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications. Pharyngitis: Hello. Pharyngitis is a term that means inflammation of the pharynx which actuall is the back of the nose, mouth and throat. Strep is a common bacteria that can cause pharyngitis. Antibiotic effect: Imagine millions of bacteria where, in a wave of antibiotic,- most of these bacteria explode, with their guts and toxins spilling out all over the place- it's a total mess. This mess attracts thousands of white blood cells, and an inflammatory response ensues that cleans this mess up- resulting in increased tenderness, redness, warmth, and swelling. The area will improve in a few days. ...Read more

Is tonsillitis, strep and/or pharyngitis catching? Can others catch it from me through common contact while i take antibiotic that works against all 3

I went to the ER thurs where the doc told me I have strep pharyngitis he gave me penicillin it is now sat and the white spots r worst is that normal?

I went to the ER thurs where the doc told me I have strep pharyngitis he gave me penicillin it is now sat and the white spots r worst is that normal?

Question unclear: How was strep pharyngitis diagnosed? Therapy will seldom shorten the duration and is designed to prevent post-streptococcal complications like acute rheumatic fever. If the diagnosis incorrect the white spots may continue to get worse. May be infectious mononucleosis. Where are they and what do they look like? . ...Read more

Could I have mono or strep? Doctor says pharyngitis. Have some white spots/redness. Have had both in past. Rapid strep test said - not tested for mono

Many causes: There are many different potential causes for sore throats. While strep throat and mono are two of the most famous causes, there are many other more common viral (and some less common bacterial) infections which can cause sore throat. If your symptoms do not improve within the next few days or if it becomes increasingly difficult to swallow then you need to see a doctor for follow-up. Good luck! ...Read more

Do I have strep or pharyngitis? I have checked for redness and white spots on my throat, but it seems like a subtle redness. How obvious is strep?

It is not always: Obvious. The beefy red, enlarged tonsils with purulent exudates and swollen lymph nodes don't always occur. A strep throat test/ culture will allow you to know for sure. ...Read more

I had pharyngitis two weeks ago and now im feeling congested and my throat hurts a lot with a little nausea strep was ruled out by the doctor?

You can always: have another bacterial infection that is not Streptococcus. Perhaps you had some antibiotics given two weeks ago? Or if not, then you may need some at this point if there is bacterial suprainfection. You need to see your doctor again for re-examination and proper diagnosis. Thanks for trusting in HealthTap. ...Read more

I want to know if Levaquin treats strep throat or bacterial pharyngitis since I'm allergic to penicillin and resistant to biaxin (clarithromycin)?.

I want to know if Levaquin treats strep throat or bacterial pharyngitis since I'm allergic to penicillin and resistant to biaxin (clarithromycin)?.

Not a good choice: Levaquin is a broad spectrum antibiotic and usually preferred for more serious infections. Strep throat is usually still amenable to most first generation antibiotics. Being allergic to penicillin suggests u shd try a cephalosporin which shd help. Resistant to Biaxin (clarithromycin) is unlikely and erythromycins may still work. Relatively safer medications like clindamycin also exist. ...Read more

I saw a doctor yesterday and was diagnosed with pharyngitis. Still waiting for strep throat culture to come back. Pain is worst. Can hardly swallow.?

Can be other things.: Strep is not the only cause of pharyngitis. Herpes simplex, chlamydia, ebv, corynebacterium diptheriae, and many others can also cause it. That is one reason why the strep check swab is done, as well as a strep culture. Your doctor should be able to do this/should have done this rapid check so you can start treatment if positive. See your doctor soon if it gets worse for empiric treatment. ...Read more

I got dx w/pharingitis. The strep test was negative, but the NP went ahead and rx a Z-Pak. If this were viral and not bacterial, would meds harm me?

I got dx w/pharingitis. The strep test was negative, but the NP went ahead and rx a Z-Pak. If this were viral and not bacterial, would meds harm me?

Excellent question: There are 2 points I wish to make. First, if you have a viral infection, placing you on an antibiotic may be harmful because you are killing off "good" bacteria in the nasopharynx. Secondly, azithromycin is not a good choice for UPPER RESPIRATORY TRACT INFECTIONS because this drug is not effective against NTHI. Finally, a rapid strep test only rules out Strep. A regular throat culture better. ...Read more
