I have a coagulation defect that caused dvt. After Coumadin (warfarin) therapy, will there be any complications if i get pregnant?
Requires extra care!: You are probably referring to a "thrombophilia" - a condition which makes a person more likely to form blood clots in the veins of the legs or pelvis. These can break free and travel to the lungs where they are potentially lethal. Women who have thrombophilias can have healthy pregnancies, but require special care. You may need to use Heparin during pregnancy and will need a hematologist's care! ...Read more

What to do if I have a coagulation defect that caused dvt. After Coumadin (warfarin) therapy, can I get pregnant without complications?
Complicated issue: You should not be on Coumadin (warfarin) if you are trying to be pregnant. Pregnancy increases the risk of clots and you may need to be Heparin type anticoagulant during pregnancy. It is not an issue for self treatment and you should discuss this issue with your doctor before you plan to get pregnant. ...Read more

Vitamin K foods: Coumadin (warfarin) acts against Vitamin K in the blood clotting reaction process, Therefore, foods high in this vitamin act to reduce the efficacy of Coumadin (warfarin). Green leafy vegetables are high in Vitamin K as are others that you can search. Be aware, bacteria in the gut produce Vitamin K, so antibiotics reducing them can reduce vitamin production and enhance Coumadin (warfarin) effects. ...Read more
Ineffective: I would urge caution as that any new product or food your eat can interfere with the warfarin and being stable with the right thickness or thinness of your blood. And, remember, there is still no diet product on the market that really leads to real or sustained weight loss. If there was every physician would be talking about it and recommending it. I would advise against using this product. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

At the present time, there appears to be a shift towards not altering the Coumadin (warfarin) levels. If you need dental surgery, such as an extraction, then the oral surgeon does have the materials to help stop the bleeding. Discuss any concerns with your physician and oral surgeon. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers

Wife having total knee replacement done in a month and will be on ASA versus something like Coumadin, she is an RN and is aware of the risks of Coumadin therapy, but she is unsure if aspirin will reduce the risk of clots as efficiently? Thanks!
Anticoagulation: People at low risk for blood clots usually receive anticoagulation therapy post surgery for 1-2 days. The choice of anticoagulation therapy is usually the ortho surgeon's choice. Individuals are not discharged on anticoagulation medications, so that is probably why aspirin was the chosen protective medication. However, confer with the surgeon to be sure. ...Read more
