Persistent cough, numbness, difficulty swallowing should be reported to the spine surgeon. ...Read more

Yes, but...: Taking pain meds within a mouth of finishing one course is typically not a problem, unless the reason for which you take it is unknown. Always take narcotics by prescription only; otherwise they can be harmful. Therefore, see your md before restarting the pain meds. ...Read more

Slowly taper: In the states we would put you on either Methadone or Buprenorphine during pregnancy and then taper after. Since that may not be an option, do a slow taper, go down to 5 pills a day for 5 days and then 4 a day for 5 days and so on. We don't usually try to detox pregnant patients since the stress can trigger early labor. Discuss your options with your ob. ...Read more

Wean Off Opiates: Since you've been on the pain meds for such a long time, i recommend that you slowly wean off the meds over a 2-3 week period at least. If you are taking more than 3 tablets daily it may take longer to wean off. The reason is that you are dependent on the medications and abruptly stopping will result in a withdrawal syndrome. To avoid or reduce these symptoms i would recommend the slow wean. ...Read more

Challenge: Some things that are worth it are difficult and even painful. Getting off of your narcotics is certainly worth it. But to do so you will have to go through some unpleasantry. But think about the wonderful things that you can do with your life once it is free of the narcotics and their withdrawal effects. Focus on the positives to help you weather the storm of depression. ...Read more

Category C: This group of meds is considered relatively safe in pregnancy if used in normal amounts. Animal studies have suggested so fetal risk but no particular risk has been found in humans. Not enough data is available to list it in a safer category. Use near the time of delivery has produced sedation and respiratory depression. ...Read more
