Norco (hydrocodone and acetaminophen) & Valium prescribed after acdf for pain or spasms. After 10 days none present. Only have cough & intermittent numbness. Is it ok to stop meds?
Good for you: Glad to hear acdf (cervical spine surgery) has worked out for you with no pain or spasms for 10 days. At 10 days out, valium & Norco (hydrocodone and acetaminophen) would be used as needed. If there is no pain, insomnia, anxiety or spasms, there is no good reason to take these. Persistent cough, numbness, difficulty swallowing should be reported to the spine surgeon. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Yes, but...: Taking pain meds within a mouth of finishing one course is typically not a problem, unless the reason for which you take it is unknown. Always take narcotics by prescription only; otherwise they can be harmful. Therefore, see your md before restarting the pain meds. ...Read more

Since that may not be an option, do a slow taper, go down to 5 pills a day for 5 days and then 4 a day for 5 days and so on. We don't usually try to detox pregnant patients since the stress can trigger early labor. Discuss your options with your ob. ...Read more

I've been on norco (hydrocodone and acetaminophen) 10/325 for over a year and just had surgery to relieve the pain. Is it okay if i stop?
Wean Off Opiates: Since you've been on the pain meds for such a long time, i recommend that you slowly wean off the meds over a 2-3 week period at least. If you are taking more than 3 tablets daily it may take longer to wean off. The reason is that you are dependent on the medications and abruptly stopping will result in a withdrawal syndrome. To avoid or reduce these symptoms i would recommend the slow wean. ...Read more
