Stop Growing Taller
Puberty decides: Every teenager is different but they all go through the same basic stages of puberty. These stages are often referred to as tanner stages (also referred to as sexual maturity level). Stage i is seen before puberty starts and stage v is when you have full adult characteristics. Once you are at stage v you are unlikely to grow any taller. Typically this is at ~15-16 for girls and ~16-17 for boys. ...Read more
Nature: Your numbers are off a bit. Most women stop at 16-17 and men at 17-18 as a response to the hormones that drive puberty. These hormones tell the growth centers to finish and solidify in preparation for adult life. The growth centers are a weaker bone feature that are subject to greater risk of injury, once closed, the weakness is gone as is the potential for more linear growth. ...Read more

Read in rare cases growth plates cease to close. But what conditions/problems cause that and do adults eventually stop growing taller & at what point?

Estrogen, it turns out, drives this and if a boy has a genetic effect of estrogen production and estrogen sensitivity the growth plates fail to close on time. A pituitary growth hormone producing tumor diagnosed before growth plate closure would also result in very tall stature. Hope this helps:) ...Read more
