If your tsh was 0.250 with first test abdominal scan shows you have a goiter and a cyst on your thyroid but the second blood test tsh now 0.612?

Thyroid.: TSH can vary slightly as in your case. On average your TSH seems pretty normal. Might want to repeat this in a few months. Mild goiter and cyst on thyroid may be related - maybe not. Depends on size and appearance. You should f/u with the doc who ordered the study.

If a person had their thyroid burnt out at least 30 years ago because of a goiter, wouldn't it be obilterated? What if the person had a u/s done and it showed throid tissue that was abnormal? What would the indications be?

Depends: You said your "thyroid burnt out" so I suspect you had radiation therapy. Such treatment will not "obliterate" your tissue completely so you will have remnants of your thyroid remaining. The current ultrasound might have just picked up those tissues. If you didn't have thyroid cancer 30 years ago and your thyroid level is current ok, you might just follow this and biopsy if it changes in time.

Is goiter hereditary?

Is goiter hereditary?

Goiter: Some goiters are present in several family members and some are not. If you are concerned about getting it yourself because others in the family have been diagnosed with this in the past. Have your PCP check your thyroid (physical exam) and order appropriate lab studies and if it is OK don't worry but get the same labs done annually.

How is goiter managed?

Variable: Goiter simply means a growth in the thyroid. Three things: 1) what are your thyroid function tests? Hyperthyroidism is managed differently from goiters with normal or low function. 2) usually an ultrasound is done to look for nodules suspicious for cancer - with biopsy if needed, 3) goiters are sometimes removed if they are enlarging significantly or cause swallowing or breathing issues.

How to control a goiter?

Depends on cause: If it is a diffuse goiter, it may be caused by high tsh, which can arise in hypothyroidism or iodine deficiency (rare in usa, as salt is iodinated) or excessive goitrogens in susceptible ppl (like cauliflower). Treating the hypothyroidism can slow growth, if the above is the cause. If enlarging modules is the cause, surgery. Depends on cause, radioactive iodine may help.

No: You cannot "catch" a goiter from others. But there are parts of the world with iodine deficiency, so that many residents will develop goiters. Foods shoulb be avoid in multinoduler goiter?

Foods shoulb be avoid in multinoduler goiter?

No food restrictions: Worldwide, the common reason for goiter is a lack of iodine, known as iodine deficiency. In order to absorb as much iodine from the bloodstream as possible, the thyroid gets bigger due to an increase in thyroid cells. In america, people get enough iodine in their diet (usually through iodine added to salt), so there aren't good nor bad foods with regard to the thyroid problem.
