Iron tablets giving me bad stomach cramps and loose stools. Is this normal and when should it pass?

Common side effect: What you are experiencing are common side effects of oral iron. You may try a different preparation. If you can not tolerate oral iron talk to your doctor about taking it intravenously. Intravenous treatment can be done in one sitting. For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Drink enough water daily, so that your urine is mostly colorless. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. Practice safe sex, if you have sex. Get HPV vaccine

Diarrhea: There are many causes of diarrhea. This does not sound like constipation. Yours is associated with cramping and mucus. As this has been going on for 2 weeks, see your doctor for further evaluation to help sort out the cause. All the best and thank you for using Health Tap.

Get GI evaluation: It's difficult to say for sure without detailed history and exam, however your symptoms could be from excessive acid, irritable bowel or chronic inflammation. Start by seeing your PCP, who will then refer you to a GI specialist if indicated. You need to establish a relationship with a local primary care physician to help you get the best care available.

On the mend?: Depending upon the nature of your food poisoning, particularly if an invasive bacteria was involved, you can experience post-infectious irritability (some use the term post-infectious irritable bowel syndrome). Of course, persistence of symptoms warrants evaluation to rule out other pathology that needs treatment. May also consider: food allergy or previously unsuspected food intolerance here.

Watch and wait: If just loose stool without fever, nausea, vomiting, belly pain then stay well hydrated and watch it for now. Can add Gatorade for some electrolytes. Possibly a reaction to a new med, new food, etc. Watch it for now and if worsens talk to your doctor.

Gastroenetritis.: Did you have Total Colectomy? And why? With Colon partial or total removal and Gall bladder removal you are prone to loose BM. Stomach cramps and sudden loose stool may not be due to your medical condition. BUt Salad after more than 36 hours would not cause this problem. Drink electrolyte water and do not eat solid food.

Stimulating bowel: You are stimulating your bowel with the water. Best not to switch the liquid out, as you will loose the benefit of the enema. 3 at one time may be a lot. All the best.

How to sort all these related things out correctly has not to be that hard by working together with the doctor. Best wishes...

Colitis: This may be irritable bowel syndrome, gluten intolerance or intestinal infection. A stool sample should be sent for culture for pathogens as well as ova and parasites. An antispasmodic medication like bentyl (dicyclomine) can be prescribed. Before meals if you have irritable bowel syndrome. A gastroenterologist is best qualified to evaluate and treat you if symptoms persist.

Swollen nodes in groin area, stomach cramps and loose stool for a week. Last night had an episode of vomiting. Unprotected sex 2 wks Ago. HIV?

Swollen nodes in groin area, stomach cramps and loose stool for a week. Last night had an episode of vomiting. Unprotected sex 2 wks Ago. HIV?

Unlikely. Get tested: Acute HIV seroconversion occurs "several " weeks after infection. Two weeks is a little early, but not impossible. I doubt HIV infection from unprotected sex two weeks earlier since these symptoms are not the typical symptoms of acute HIV seroconversion infection. The way to exclude it with complete certainty is to measure HIV viral load by PCR. Antibody tests are usually negative.

What would cause stomach cramps for 3 days now that is relieved temporarily after eating and lying down? No throwing up or diarehea.

Gastritis? Ulcer?: Stomach pain or cramps would be located in area of upper mid abdomen. Pain relieved by food makes may be one of the two above. Some causes are one of a combo of stress, highly spicy foods, excess coffee, anti-inflammatory drug...Food neutralizes stomach acid, as do anti-acid drugs. Lying down perhaps helps relax. If reducing exacerbating factors doesn't resolve the cramps, gp or GI evaluation.
