Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (Definition)

Continuous positive airway pressure involves the constant application of external pressure to all phases of breathing. The patient would feel as if breathing against the constant headwind. Inhalation would be easier as the pressure enables air entry. Exhalation prevents complete relaxation. This can be helpful in obstructive sleep ...Read more

What causes apnea: Your sleep apnea may be a symptom of a metabolic problem. If your body is overly alkaline, your breathing would slow down to help you accumulate co2 and therefore be less alkaline.
What causes alkalinity in the first place? One major cause is poor metabolism of carbohydrates also known as Insulin resistance. Reduce your consumption of sugars and carbohyrates. See a md who is knowledgable in metab. ...Read more

I have osa and have a cpap machine. Its only on 7.5 rate at the moment. It seems to work and the mask is comfortable but I'm still tired the next day. What could be thereason?

Follow-up study: If you haven't already done so, consider getting another sleep study done with the CPAP machine in place. The study will show if the machine is properly treating your specific situation, and confirm that you are no longer experiencing apnea. Many people immediately feel more rested. Others, (me included--i use CPAP too) don't feel any more rested, but I know that is is better for me. Keep using. ...Read more

I was diagnosed with mild to mod OSA by home sleep test. Been using CPAP for 2 wks and still tired. Also am mild hypothyroid (TSH 5.01). What to do?

Endocrinologist need: OSA and elevated TSH levels can coexist. Based on current literature evidence, it is difficult to say which comes first; the disruptive effects of OSA on the hormone system and then subsequently TSH elevations or perhaps vice versa. Make sure the CPAP mask is well fitting. It not, ask for another - there are many different designs. See an endocrinologist for a hormone evaluation, incl. Thyroid. ...Read more

I have ob. Sleep apnea & am using a cpap nightly. I sleep 8-9 hrs/night. Still tired. Sleep studies also show alpha wave intrusion. How is this treated?

Other causes: Alpha wave intrusions have not been shown to be a problem by themselves, and do not need treatment. Assuming the CPAP is set correctly, controls the apnea, and you are using it every night all night, I would look for other causes of sleepiness (including narcolepsy and idiopathic hypersomnia). Sometimes sleepiness from sleep apnea gets better with CPAP but not completely, and stimulants may help. ...Read more

I have sleep apnea. Cpap reduced ahi to below 1. Still tired. What tests rec. Before stimulating meds? Any stimulants not raise bp? Hard to focus@work

A few rule out tests: I would suggest keeping a sleep diary of how much sleep you get for 2 weeks, repeating the sleep study with your CPAP on then performing a mwt (maintenance of wakefulness test). This will determine if you're getting enough quantity of sleep. You should also have blood work done that rules out hypothyroidism, anemia, kidney or liver disease. Consult with your doctor and sleep specialist. ...Read more

Retitration: If you are compliant with the use of CPAP and still feel fatigued during the day, you may want to go back and see your sleep physician to get your CPAP pressure retitrated. If you have been using the CPAP for couple of years, you may need your pressure readjusted. This is especially true if you have gained significant amount of weight or have started on new medications. ...Read more

Cpap. Apneas low at pressure 11. Feel like I want it turned up. Why would I feel relaxed by machine & want more pressure? Daytime fatigue persists.

Recheck pressures: It is possible that the pressure is set too low-daytime fatigue should improve. There are a number of ways to check. Repeat the sleep titration and test the pressure to be sure apneas are gone. Read out the memory from the CPAP machine you use and show to the doctor to see if it is operating properly. Get machine upgraded to an autopap which can adjust pressure within a range to your needs. ...Read more
