What do I do if I had bronchitis and I'm still coughing occasionally after antibiotics 2 months ago?

What do I do if I had bronchitis and I'm still coughing occasionally after antibiotics 2 months ago?

Possibilities...: Sometimes, after the infection of acute bronchitis has resolved, there is residual airway inflammation which, in some patients, results in bronchospasm and coughing. If this is the case with you, bronchodilator and steroid inhalers can be used until this cough completely resolves. So, see your doctor so this regimen can be prescribed once the diagnosis is made. ...Read more

Cough (Definition)

The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more

Common cold: Difficult to know whether you really needed an antibiotic or not, but once you have had infection of the upper respiratory tract (including the trachea and bronchi) it takes time for the tissues to heal and to reconstitute all the functions which may have been impaired by the cause of the infection. Be patient, time will heal. ...Read more

I had cough for 4 weeks now I have been prescribed antibiotics for a week but I still have the tingly cough. At first I had a mucus clear cough?

Possibility.....: Typically, a bacterial bronchitis, treated with antibiotics, resolves within about 7-10 days. Since your cough is lasting longer than that, you may have bronchospasm that can occur following a bout of acute bronchitis. The treatment usually consists of a bronchodilator inhaler and perhaps a steroid inhaler. See your doctor again for diagnosis and treatment. ...Read more

I am finishing a course of antibiotics. It has been a week and I don't feel any more cold sypmtoms but I still have a cough. The constant cough produces mucus.

Follow up with MD: Generally antibiotics not for cold (viral), but for bacteria that can arise in setting of cold. Mucus production can be in setting of either, but green or dark yellow mucus suggests possible bacterial infection. See your MD for followup if prolonged, shortness breath, hi fever, blood in sputum, nausea/vomit, and other red flags beyond a lingering cold. I assume no history of asthma or smoking. ...Read more

Productive cough: The purpose of a cough is to clear unwanted material from your respiratory tract. The material you are taking is a substance designed to liquify the mucous and aid in the clearing of secretions but will not stop you from coughing. If it is keeping you awake you might try something with dextromethorphan in it. Check with your friendly pharmacist. They will have suggestions. ...Read more

I've been diagnosed with bronchitis, been on antibiotics for 6 days, but I still have a chesty cough, is this normal? I feel a lot better than I did.

Yes: Cough may persist and will slowly get better over the next week or so. The so-called "chesty" cough comes from the excessive mucus in the airways that rattles with each coughing effort and creates the "wet" character of the cough. Please make sure that you complete the antibiotic therapy for the prescribed duration & get a follow up evaluation from your doctor. ...Read more

I was diagnosed with pneumonia on thursday. I am on antibiotics and my cough is much better. My chest still hurts when I move or cough. Is this normal?

Chest pain: In an illness where there is a lot of coughing, the muscles between the ribs (intercostal muscles) often get strained. It is due to the sharp, forceful contractions necessary to produce a cough. These muscles then hurt with movement, more coughing, and sometimes even just by touching. As the cough subsides, this pain will gradually go away. See your dr for advice about using pain medications. ...Read more

My son is still running a fever of over 101 and has a cough despite being on antibiotics for 4 days now. Should I be concerned?

Not necessarily: The most likely explanation is that the fever and cough are being caused by one of the many respiratory viruses that are very common this time of year. Antibiotics will not be effective because there is no bacterial infection. It should run its course, but if the fever persists for several more days it is important to have him re-evaluated by his doctor. ...Read more

Is green sputum, while I am fighting cold, a sample 4having course of antibiotic? Its th 7th day and still. Only trebon.37.3c max temp, cough, no pain chest

Fighting infection: Green sputum means that your body is fighting the injection. It could be a viral or bacterial infection. Antibiotics work only on bacterial infection. If you take antibiotics while you are having a viral infection it will cause more harm than good. If you start having fever, facial pain, shortness of breath, blood in the sputum than you will need further evaluation and possibly antibiotics ...Read more

After antibiotics for cough had sorethroat colds fever cough again. Now no more colds fever sorethroat but cough still lingering, do I need antibiotics?

Probably not.: Your cough might just be drainage from the back of your throat due to allergies, the cold weather, ; viruses. You may want to try any allergy medicines with expectorant if you need to thin out your mucus. Drink plenty of warm liquids, honey with tea, chicken broth, warm chocolate drinks, coffee etc. If you develop fever and your condition worsened, time to go back to your doctor for an exam. ...Read more

About three weeks ago I was on antibiotics for bronchitis. Or phneumonia. I still have a violent cough am extremely tired and now have lime greephlegm?

Still infected: The history of continuing cough with the discolored phlegm makes me concerned that you may be only partially treated. I would check with your doctor and consider another course of antibiotics and would choose a different class of antibiotic if in fact another course is to be prescribed as you may have a resistant organism to the first one used. ...Read more

I have a bad cough. Had xray taken and an on antibiotics for three days. Still terrible. Should I go back to docs or give it more time?

Depends...: If you have pneumonia, you likely need more time. If you have bronchitis, you would expect to begin feeling better soon. The cough can continue if there is ongoing airway inflammation which can lead to bronchospasm. Sometimes, bronchodilator and even steroid inhalers may be needed for a short time to resolve the cough. Your doctor can prescribe these medications so see your doc if cough persists. ...Read more

My son has had a dry cough for about 4 months, he had tonsillitis to start with but the cough is still here even after antibiotics. No cough at night.?

He should be seen: It could be pertussis, or cough-variant asthma, even without a night-time cough, or allergy-triggered cough. There are other types of lung problems more common in certain age groups so it is important to know how old he is. No matter what, a prolonged cough is not normal and a complete history including environment, exam, possible blood/skin/xray tests need to be considered. ...Read more

I got bronchitis and I drank my antibiotics but my cough hasent went away and I still have a lot of mucus. Recently my chest startedto hurt. Please help?

Two issues: One: usually a doc treats you empirically for the most likely "bug" causing the bronchitis but you might have a bug that is resistant-is not killed by that particular drug. He can get a sputum culture and send it to a lab. Two: Even after having killed the bugs you could still have some residual cough secondary to the damage done. That your body will cure with tincture of time. Discuss it w/ doc. ...Read more
