Common : Common symptoms of spinal stenosis

Leg pain with walking can be caused by either arterial circulatory insufficiency or from spinal stenosis. Leg pain from either condition will go away with rest, but with spinal stenosis the patient usually has to sit down for a few minutes to ease the leg and often low back pain, whereas leg pain from vascular claudication will go away if the patient simply stops walking.

Although occasionally the leg pain and stenosis symptoms will come on suddenly, they generally develop over the course of several years. The longer a patient with spinal stenosis stands or walks, the worse the leg pain will get.

Flexing forward or sitting will open up the spinal canal and relieve the leg pain and other symptoms, but they recur if the patient gets back into an upright posture. Numbness and tingling can accompany the pain, but true weakness is a rare symptom of spinal stenosis. An older person leaning over the handle of their shopping cart while making short stumbling steps often has spinal stenosis.
Muscle soreness in upper arms could be due to cervical stenosis but there are other reasons as well, like electrolyte imbalance, side effects of medications and myopathy. Recommend seeing a specialist for final diagnosis and treatment. ...Read more

I have bilateral thigh pain stiffness when walking, recently I have been getting muscle spasms in my right calf. Could this be spinal stenosis?

I have bilateral thigh pain stiffness when walking, recently I have been getting muscle spasms in my right calf. Could this be spinal stenosis?

Doubtful: Unless you have congenital spinal stenosis the odds of having spinal stenosis at your age are unlikely without any prior history of lumbar problems such as spondylolisthesis. Most likely muscular but would also consider vascular claudication... Again less likely but in the differential. Could also be nutritional and from electrolyte imbalance such as potassium insufficiency. ...Read more

Calf Calorics: Heat is one of many sensations, both normal and abnormal, that the body can perceive due to a stimulus that is real or unreal. Yes: It sees like with sitting you are causing compression in the area of the abductors and maybe the gluteus muscles. It depends on your weight and what type of exercise you do,. Running, elliptical machines and stair climbing can cause tightness in the quadriceps and hamstring muscles. With a unilateral spasm, it could be the way you sit at your desk or drive your car. May need an evaluation. ...Read more
