Common finding: You seldom get a sinus infection as a primary event. It will often follow allergic drainage, irritant reaction to things like smoke or a cold. The length of abx treatment is based on eliminating the germ, but it may not alter the events, allergies, etc. That set you up for the infection. Monitor the situation for now & have rechecked if sx return.

Diagnosis: If nasal discharge has been going on for a long time, you need a diagnosis. We can not simply stop your discharge without knowing what is wrong with your nose. Diagnoses include, allergic rhinitis, rhino-sinusitis, over use of otc nasal sprays, granulomas, nasal polyps to name a few. See an ENT doctor for a specific diagnosis and therapy.

What can I do about clear nasal discharge and excessive tearing?

What can I do about clear nasal discharge and excessive tearing?

Sounds like allergy: If there is also sneezing, then this would confirm hayfever or allergic rhinitis. You can try Claritin or competing brands. If there is nasal congestion, then claritin-d but not if you have blood pressure problems, heart disease, or stroke. If it is year round or severe, you may want to get allergy testing to see what you are allergic to.

My grand daughter has brown nasal discharge?

My grand daughter has brown nasal discharge?

Foreign body in nose: I do not know the age of your granddaughter. It is common for young children to put small items in their nose. These small items can cause localized infections that can create foul smelling non-clear nasal discharge. I recommend having a doctor evaluate her nose soon.

Nasal discharge is greenish. My doc says you can't tell too much from the color?

He/she is right: The color of your nasal or lung secretions does not tell you much if anything about whether you have a bacterial or viral illness, as they both can cause green/yellow/etc discharges.

I have a greenish whitish but watery nasal discharge. Could it be because of bronchitis? What should I do?

I have a greenish whitish but watery nasal discharge. Could it be because of bronchitis? What should I do?

Bronchitis: Acute bronchitis is usually a viral infection, and this may also produce other changes in the upper respiratory tract. Without being able to examine you the best thing would be to see your PCP if this does not clear as your bronchitis resolves. Good luck.

Mucus: It could be thick mucus or indeed a type of worm. It is difficult to comment without an examination. If you notice this again, keep a sample and take it to your doctor the next time who can arrange the sample to be examined in the lab.
