Steroid Inhaler (Overview)

Inhaled corticosteroids help keep your airways from swelling up. This helps keep your asthma symptoms away. If your child cannot use an inhaler, your doctor will give you Pulmicort Respules. This drug is used with a nebulizer. This machine can turn liquid medicine into a spray, so your child can breathe the medicine in.

In myself &others I know l locally here in south many drs prescribe ventolin inhalers first if that doesn't help enuf they go to steroid inhaler, why?

Because: It sounds like you are referring to treating asthma or reactive airways disease. Ventolin - a beta agonist medication - helps relax the smooth muscle lining your airways and allows for improved airflow dynamics. For some people they have a limited response to this type of medicine and inhaled steroids(which have more side effects) can address airway inflammation which can also contribute. ...Read more

If I use a steroid inhaler for my asthma, is it dangerous to nurse my baby?

If I use a steroid inhaler for my asthma, is it dangerous to nurse my baby?

No: Using a steroid inhaler is not a reason to stop nursing a healthy baby. The known benefits of breast milk far outweigh any theoretical risks from the medication. You absorb only a small amount of the steroid from your inhaler into your bloodstream. Only a tiny amount of that small amount would make it into breast milk - perhaps not even a detectable amount at all. ...Read more

Normal chest X-ray. Persistent cough since 2 months that sometime gets better,99-99.8 fever that comes &goes, taking steroid inhaler but not effective?

Fever: You do not have fever. This is normal body temperature depending upon the time of day and what you have been doing. Unless your body temperature reaches 100F or fails to get as low as 98.6F (37) during a 24 period you do not have fever. Your cough could be due to one of the conditions I mentioned earlier, but could also be due to other things. See your doctor and get examined. Good luck. ...Read more

I can't avoid some of my asthma triggers, is it safe to use my steroid inhaler?

I can't avoid some of my asthma triggers, is it safe to use my steroid inhaler?

Consider alternative: Few people prescribed steroid inhalers get by without them. When they try they have a poorer quality of life, use other asthma medications excessively & have asthma episodes requiring oral steroids to prevent death or hospitalization. Five days of oral Prednisone is the equivalent of 2-4 years of daily inhaled steroids. Inhaled steroids are safe & effective with minor side-effects. Don't be fooled. ...Read more

Which one is better for long term asthma prevention, steroid inhaler or oral controlling tablets?

Steroid? Singulair (montelukast)?: Montelukast (singulair), Accolate & zyflo (zileuton) are nonsteroidal tablets that have limited anti-inflammatory effects when compared to inhaled corticosteroids. For mild persistent asthma both types of controller medications are effective. For more severe asthma inhaled steroids work better. You can take both for added effect. Both types of medications treat but neither prevents asthma. ...Read more

My steroid inhaler doesn't seem to help my breathing difficulties when I use it?

My steroid inhaler doesn't seem to help my breathing difficulties when I use it?

Slow, long-acting: Steroid inhalers are not "rescue" medications, and will not make your breathing easier right away like albuterol does. Using steroid inhaler daily as directed works to prevent flare-ups and make your lungs less sensitive, but will not give instant relief in an attack. You should still have a rescue inhaler such as albuterol available for fast relief when needed. ...Read more

Can using a steroid inhaler for nose make my baby sick?

Can using a steroid inhaler for nose make my baby sick?

Follow Rx only.: Nasal steroid preparations can be very effective - if used correctly & with proper dosage & duration. Also, they require the patient inhale thru nose. It's unlikely your baby can use it effectively. If you're referring to your own use affecting the baby, then not directly. Be sure you only use steroids exactly as rx'd-- & that applies even more so if you're giving them to a child. ...Read more

Why do I need to take a bronchodilator before a steroid inhaler?

Why do I need to take a bronchodilator before a steroid inhaler?

Depends: If asthma is under control just take your steroid inhaler. You shouldn't need your bronchodilator (rescue inhaler) on a routine basis. On the other hand if you are experiencing symptoms of asthma - coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, chest pain - a bronchodilator can relieve bronchospasm & airway obstruction permitting the inhaled steroid to reach the more affected breathing tubes. ...Read more
