No, but: Evaluation of a thyroid nodule today largely depends on clinical, lab and ultrasound characteristics, not size. What was seen on the US is what is important and too many don't give details. This should be evaluated by someone who is experienced in treating thyroid nodules. That said, thyroid nodules are common and the vast majority not concerning and prove to be benign & rarely effect voice. ...Read more

Biopsy: If your nodules have grown that much they need to be biopsied. You also should be on replacement brand name T4 to reduce the stimulation to thyroid and nodule enlargement. Thyroid nodules: No, most thyroid nodules are not cancerous. A thyroid ultrasound is very sensitive at picking up tiny and often insignificant nodules. There are some features of thyroid nodules that make them more suspicious, such as large solitary "cold" ones, and other features. The best person to evaluate is an Endocrinologist who does his/her own U/S guided biopsies. ...Read more
No: The majority of lumps in the thyroid when noted to be multiple on scan represent the condition "multinodular goiter" These are almost always benign. When a solitary lesion is present that is "cold" on isotope scan, this is suspicious for possible malignancy and should always be removed. Bx has a certain degree of error especially if a follicular lesion looking benign has invaded capsule. ...Read more

Lumpy: If you had a fine needle biopsy of a thyroid nodule read as benign, this is likely correct. Many people have multinodular thyroids (lumps). You can see an endocrinologist, a doctor who can assess the overall function of your thyroid and follow changes in the original nodule biopsied, as well as the others, in case re-biopsy is in order. Had hemithyroidectomy last year, the bit of thyroid that's left has a lump 2.5 x 3 cm. The scan showed it has electrolytes in it, what does this mean?
Electrolytes?: Electrolytes mean calcium, sodium, potassium, magnesium etc....Thyroid scan cannot see these electrolytes. 2.5x3cm is a relatively large thyroid mass and, especially if it is solid, biopsy is likely needed. Why did you get the hemithyroidectomy in the first place? Concern of cancer? It is possible that you will need total thyroidectomy. I recommend follow-up with doc. Good luck. ...Read more
