Hard lump in back of neck one inch from hairline in trapezius or between sternocleidomastoid. Have had for a year and I tense my shoulders, what is it?
Many possibilities: How big? increasing in size? painful? history of infections? history of cancer? how deep? what does it feel like? swollen lymph nodes in the area? redness to the skin? does it move or is it fixed in position? drainage? fever? itching? fatigue? Get checked out: A lump on your sternocleidomastoid could be a lymph node. In that case, you might have an infection or inflammation. There are many causes of stiff neck, but in the setting of swollen lymph nodes, i would be sure to be checked out. Reactive adenitis: Could be a non specific viral illness that triggered local lymph node and parotid gland swelling. Just requires observation for now.
