Muscles move joints, stabilize the body, move air and food through the organs, act as valves for bladder, bowel and other organs. They control movement of the eyes. They help us express ourselves by changing the shape of our ...Read more
Sternocleidomastoid: It doesn't affect the tongue at all. It is connected to the mastoid process behind the ear and goes to the clavicle. It does not impact tongue motion. The tongue itself is mainly a muscle called the genioglossus. Many other muscles impact the motion of the tongue. ...Read more

Is it normal to have induration just below earflap and 2 cm above the mandibular angle between ramus of the mandible and sternocleidomastoid muscle?
Not normal: Induration is never a normal finding. When tissue becomes inflamed either from an infectious or non infectious source, hormones are released in the local area that result in a series of events causing redness, warmth, pain, and swelling as the capillaries in the area become more "leaky" causing induration. The area you describe has many different potential causes. See your doctor immediately. ...Read more

Are sternocleidomastoid muscle syndrome and tmjd related? Does one problem cause a flare up of the other? Symptoms of both seem similar.
The muscles of the head and neck area are often involved in temporomandibular joint disorder.
Muscle spasm is a common finding and many different sets of muscles can become tender/spasmotic when the condition flares.

Can sternocleidomastoid muscle cause swelling to lymph nodes at the base of my neck just behind clavicle?
I have multiple baby shotty soft moveable lymph nodes I can feel posterior to my sternocleidomastoid muscle. And cervical. Doc said they r ok.?
Probably OK: Without personally evaluating these it is difficult to know what these are. Lymph nodes help clean up infection for a living and when they are earning their keep they may become mildly enlarged, generally soft, mobile and non-tender. Suspect your physician is correct. ...Read more
Can a chronically tight sternocleidomastoid muscle cause you to have TMJ issues and aches on the jaw muscles?
I have tight sternocleidomastoid muscle, plus scalene and painful tmj joint but normal opening. No neurological symptoms. Could all this be muscle?
Yes, muscle spasms: It is difficult to make a suggestion without more history but TMJ can cause muscle spasms, but not usually in the SCM and scalenes. The SCM muscle may be spastic by the way you sleep or use it and also may be caused by a virus. Try ibuprofen and if not relieved in 2-3 days see a doctor as there may be something under the muscle causing it. ...Read more
Can STERNOCLEIDOMASTOID muscle get caught on something? Felt an intense snapping in that area running from behind ear down neck. Area is now sore.
Woke up today with a stiff neck from below ear downwards, feel unwell and lump on sternocleidomastoid muscle. My neck really tender hurts to touch?
Get checked out: A lump on your sternocleidomastoid could be a lymph node. In that case, you might have an infection or inflammation. There are many causes of stiff neck, but in the setting of swollen lymph nodes, I would be sure to be checked out. Meningitis can cause stiff neck, for example, and you don't want to miss that diagnosis. I would see a doc asap. ...Read more

Can tight sternocleidomastoid. Muscle make mastoid proces more prominent on one side. Also have ear pressure and numbness on a cheek all same side
Yes: The sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscle inserts into the sternoclavicular area and then runs up into an insertion directly into the mastoid process Thus, if the SCM muscle is in spasm or tight, it will pull on the mastoid process likely causing inflammation and swelling. The masseter muscle in your cheek is also connected to the mastoid process, and, could tighten w/ hyperspasmodic activity in former ...Read more
Can sternocleidomastoid muscle tightness make mastoids process more prominent than on the other side? Also have ear pressure and slight cheek numbnes
I suppose: It is theoretically possible to get a so-called "tug lesion" (bone overgrowth at the tendon insertion) at the mastoid process due to long-standing, sustained abnormal muscle traction or dysfunction, but I have never seen it or heard of it in that location. Most likely there is another reason for what you are feeling. ...Read more
Maybe a little: Muscle injuries generally respond well to ice, rest, stretching, and time. Medications like nsaids (ibuprofen, naproxen, etc...) can help decrease inflammation in and around the muscle. Muscle relaxers can sometimes be helpful, but have the undesirable side effects of drowsiness and sometimes disorientation. Consult with your physician to decide what combination of treatments is best for you. ...Read more
My sternocleidomastoid as well as scalene and other neck musclesstays flexed for 2-3 seconds after I relax the muscles. Also I begin to feel a twitch in my lower lip upon relase of flexing the muscles. Is this a sign of muscular disease?
Dystonia? Stress?: 2 possibilities come to mind quickly. 1 is mechanically induced muscle spasm which could be postural and/or due to skeletal abnormalities. 2 dystonia (regional) in which mechanisms in the nervous system mis-program muscle relaxation and contraction. This requires neurological assessment. ...Read more
Icing, Advil (ibuprofen)...: The masseter muscle is one of the muscles of mastication (biting), and it is an extremely powerful muscle, that is constantly in use. If it is bilateral and painful you must rule out mumps (inflammation of the parotid glands) that are deeper but very near. Most likely from night grinding, over-use, over-stretched. Ice, advil, (ibuprofen) limit to soft diet, reduce over opening. Moist heat too. If no relief>dr. ...Read more
