Any wound a problem: Tetanus spores from the dirt can get into any break in your skin and potentially germinate. Over time the growing germs may elaborate the tetanus toxin and give you tetanus. I stepped on a nail last night. It wasn't rusty. It only went in an inch or two. I cleaned it right after. Could I have tetanus?
Possible: Only if enough of a sample of contamination. Anything is possible. However, it is cutomary that with minimaly dirty wounds that are cleaned well immediately every 8 years is enough. Tetanus safe: If your last tetanus shot was less than 7 years ago, it is not necessary to get another booster now. Your management with washing, etc., was appropriate but it is still possible to get an infection from bacteria on the skin whenever there is a cut or puncture. About 48 hours ago I stepped on a rusty nail went went to inches in my foot hip replacement on the same side so I had a tetanus shot 12 years ago do I?
Depends: If you have not received a booster within 10 years you should. If is more than 5 but less than 10, it wouldn't hurt & would improve your protection so you wouldn't need it again soon. De sure to clean the wound and monitor it for swelling, redness or discharge. There are other germs that can cause problems. Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Sort of: If it is a true puncture wound with a rusty or dirty nail we generally would like the shot no more then five years. The vaccine loses potency at about 7 to ten years. Talk to your dr. Keep the wound clean. Read more
Yesterday I stepped on a little nail? Probably went in less than 1/4 inch, and looks fine now. Should I get a tetanus booster?
Depends: The depth of the injury means more for the potential germs planted inside than the issue of tetanus. Cleaning the wound quickly with soap & water is the best initial action. Even a superficial scratch can allow the tetanus spores to set up in your body & cause tetanus. If you are > 5 years out from your last tetanus, or never completed the primary series, you should consider it. Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
How long do you have before you step on a nail or something to get a tetanus shot, what if you can't get one for a few hours after the incident?
Varies: We encourage the injection within 24-48 hours. Good wound cleaning as soon as possible after the injury helps prevent a wound infection by any germ with or without tetanus spores that may be there. If you've had the primary series and your last booster was within 10 years, the shot is optional but a good decision because you can boost your protection for another decade.
