Ketosis (Definition)

Ketosis describes a state of increased ketone bodies in the blood stream. Ketone bodies are generated from the breakdown of lipids (fat) when there are low levels of blood sugar or cells are not able to absorb the blood sugar present, as in diabetic ketoacidosis. Some diets which limit carbohydrates cause low blood sugar and may also result in ketosis. Ketone bodies disrupt the acidity of blood and when dangerously elevated can overwhelm the buffering ability of the body and ...Read more

Will eating low carb everyday (less than 30g)a day put me into ketosis? If not how can I get into ketosis? I'm 5'3 217lbs

Possibly: Ketosis and ketoacidosis are different things. If your body senses it is not getting enough carbohydrates, it will start using fat to feed some tissues. This process increases the production of ketone bodies, which are acids. We all make ketones when we starve. A healthy diet needs about 50% of total calories to come from carbohydrates. In diabetics, ketones can be very dangerous. ...Read more

How many carbs should I eat daily to get into ketosis. I'm interested in a ketogenic diet. I'm not diabetic.

Depends on factors: Ketosis, when the body shifts from glucose 2 ketones as n energy source, depends on many factors like how much glc "reserve" was built up in the liver, & ur activities (energy in vs. Energy out). A ketogenic diet, where 10-15% of cal r from carbs, takes anywhere from 3-14 days to deplete glucose stores. Genetic factors also play a role. Is carb cycling (2 high carb day followed by 1 low carb day) long term safe for someone who is athletic and don't need to lose weight?

If you are a long, term high intensity runner, triathlon, you need to have more calories (carbs) before hand to not burn up (or consume) your muscles as fuel instead of the carbs. If you just do mild exercising (nothing long distance), it will be safer. Moderation is key! ...Read more

Is it possible for a person to lose 100lbs on the Atkins diet in 4 months if they have over a 100lbs to lose? Staying under 10-20 carbs a day?

Unlikely: To lose 100 lbs in 4 months, you would have to take in about 3000 calories less per day than you are burning up (1 lb= 3500 calories). Unless you are currently taking in well over 3000 calories daily and are able to make changes in your diet to eliminate at least 2500, then do exercise to burn another 500 calories daily, it is not possible to lose that much in 4 months (and probably not healthy) ...Read more
