In a post appendectomy or exlap patient, when should the wound be cleaned and dressing changed? How often?
Daily but steri stay: Most patients are discharged with a dressing that can be removed. Daily dressing changes allow the incision to be inspected. If you had exploratory laparotomy you may have steri strips or staples. They stay until you see your surgeon. The instructions should be on discharge summary. Including shower instructions. Your surgeon will review findings and look at wound in follow up. ...Read more
See your surgeon!: If you have an abscess, it must be drained. If it has been drained, and you are having pain from the drain, that will improve as the abscess resolves. I am assuming if you know you have an abscess, someone is treating it. Abscesses (an infected fluid collection) are painful, but that usually improves with drainage and antibiotics. ...Read more

Post appendectomy tightness in left knee cap, pain when I move it. I spent most of the day after surgery walking around, then all of a sudden this began. On Levaquin, (levofloxacin) but have only had 1 dose.
Side effect: Levaquin (levofloxacin) can cause tendonitis, but only one dose is unlikely to be reason, but not impossible. Another thought would be that you favored the left leg while walking around post surgery and it is slightly inflamed? If it continues, ask your MD about switching antibiotics. ...Read more

I want my appendix out so I know I will never get appendicitis. What can I do to get an appendectomy?
About to shower for the first time after my appendectomy. Do put new bandages on the stitches (dissolvable)? It was laparascopic.
Follow the Rules: Customs vary quite a bit amongst surgeons with respect to how they advise their patients to care for wounds postop. I use "super glue" over absorbable suture w/o any dressing; my patients can shower the day after surgery. If your surgeon made no mention of using a dressing after showering, you are probably "good-to-go", but it's no harm to ask his/her office. Good luck! ...Read more
