Statins (Overview)

Several drugs exist which lower cholesterol by inhibiting an enzyme in liver cells (hmg-coa reductase) that is involved in cholesterol synthesis. These all have generic names that end in -statin, e.g. Atorvastatin (lipitor) and Simvastatin (zocor). Since nearly all of the meds in this class have been shown to have similar cardiovascular benefits, we often discuss them as a group: statins.

Husband cholesterol is 9 what statin should he take? Am amazed cause he doesn't eat a lot of fatty foods

Agree: Agree with dr koch. You correctly pointed out that cholesterol has more to do with heredity than diet. The choice of statin medication is not as important as the lowering of ldl. All of them are good. ...Read more

Statin-myalgia: Muscle pain due to statin has different mechanisms, some are genetic factors, toxic effect of the drug on mitochondria, others due to coenzyme q10 or vit d deficiency

Are statins safe?

Yes: Statin medications used to treat high cholesterol are considered safe. As with all medications and medical procedures, we weigh the risks vs. The benefits. The risks of statins is very low (may adversely affect the liver but this is rare) and the benefits are great (significant reduction in heart disease and stroke.) discuss this with your doctor, in light of your individual medical conditions. ...Read more

Different dose or me: Compliance with medication is affected when problems arise, especially ed. Try switching to a different statin, lower the dose & combine with another cholesterol medication. Consider a stress test b/c ED and coronary artery blockage are connected. Decrease your animal fat including dairy and eat more plants. If: If those are your levels before taking any medication and there is no premature heart disease in your family and you have no high blood pressure or diabetes or heart disease or history of stroke you do not need treatment. Some people have a high HDL cholesterol and still get heart problems. But in general, an HDL level above 60 is associated with a lower risk of heart disease. Most experts do not use ratios now but look at non-hdl cholesterol (total minus the hdl) and the levels of LDL cholesterol. You appear to not need any lipid therapy with those levels. ...Read more

What side effects will I have when I start to use statins for lowering cholesterol?

Statin side effects: Hopefully you will have none! Most people do not. I find zocor (simvastatin) or Simvastatin to have the most. Leg cramps are common with this one along with muscle aches. Sometimes coq 10 helps these side effects. Grapefruit juice should be avoided since it can increase blood levels of some of the statins. You should really have a discussion with your doc since many of the statins are now generic and cheap. ...Read more

What's the cheapest effective statin drug?

Walmart: Lovastatin (mevacor), and pravastatin (pravachol) are available from walmart and many other pharmacies for $4 (for a month's supply). Simvastatin (zocor) is available generically but costs about $30 for a month's supply (20 mg). Atorvastatin (lipitor) has also become generic but I don't have access to the price. A double strength pill of any of the above cut in half will cut your cost in half. ...Read more

No, and maybe: Stains will significantly lower LDL and stabilize plaques and may even cause regression of the plaque. Primary prevention with statins is also well documented. No other agent or class has this data. 30 percent is not bad due to the fact its not blocking flow but can rupture and cause a heart attack. ...Read more

If I have had serious muscle and joint pain in my thighs and knees from taking different statin drugs, is there any statin drug that I can safely take?

Probably not: Most people with statin induced muscle pain will have it from all statins. There are other types of choelsterol lowering drugs that are not statins that can be tried including niacin. All drugs, however do have side effects so it can be difficult to find one you tolerate. ...Read more

If im taking statin pills and my liver enzymes are elevated is it dangerous? What will it do in the long run?

My leg has been swelling up lately, could that be a side effect of the statins im taking? Would it be better to take niacin instead? What else causes I

Proabably not: Statins should not cause leg swelling. Leg cramping or pain at times, but usually not swelling. Swelling of one leg could be due to venous insufficiency or leaky leg veins. Obesity can contribute to this. Must also consider that a blood clot in the leg usually causes pain and swelling. ...Read more
