Pregnancy (Definition)

When your due date arrives, you will be more than ready to have your baby! Most women deliver the baby somewhere between 37 and 42 weeks. According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, only 5% of babies arrive on the exact due date. Approximately 7% of babies are not delivered by 42 weeks, and when that happens, it is referred to ...Read more

What type of bacterial infection is methicillin resistant staphylococcus aureus (mrsa)?

A bad type.: Mrsa is a potent strain of staph bacteria that worries doctors because it is resistant to the antibiotic methicillin, which for many years was the single best treatment for staph infections. It is usually treatable with other antibiotics, such as Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim) or doxycycline, but such infections can be very virulent and contagious. ...Read more

Sinus Infectipn-gene sequencing of a culture was positive for staphylococcus epidermidis MRSE. Are antibiotics the only way to cure the infection?

Sinus Infectipn-gene sequencing of a culture was positive for staphylococcus epidermidis MRSE. Are antibiotics the only way to cure the infection?

Appropriate Rx?: That seems like an unusual bacteria for sinusitis – I question the accuracy of the test. Probably that was a skin contaminant that has nothing to do with your sinusitis. Actually, the IDSA discourages antibiotic use for acute sinusitis. Would seek ID specialist or ENT. Antiinflammatory meds may help. Antibiotics could have side effects. Need to try conservative treatment first. Hope that helps. ...Read more

Can good hygiene prevent pseudomonas aeruginosa infection?

Can good hygiene prevent pseudomonas aeruginosa infection?

Yes and no: Pseudomonas can be transmitted differently - contact exposure, airborne. Also, it may live on some of us without causing any disease, but when local immunity diminishes, it may start causing a problem. Skin infections caused by pseudomonas mandate usual hygiene measures such as hand washing, using protective wear, disposal of infected materials etc. But not 100% guarantee of protection. ...Read more

Vaginal staph infection, given erythromycin, are these the right treatment? Thanks

Vaginal staph infection, given erythromycin, are these the right treatment? Thanks

Change Doctor: I would advise a change in physicians. Anyone still treating patients with Erythromycin for any infection does not have the best interest of the patient at heart. Erythromycin, because it has so many intolerable side effects, is not a good treatment in general. And, Erythromycin does not treat the common forms of staph that are plaguing our societies. More effective antibiotics are available. ...Read more
