I don't have racing heart or hyperventilation during my panic attacks. Only uncomfy chest, pvcs, dizzy & short of breath. Cardiac r/o. Possible?

Panic can be unique: First, i hope an actual medical condition has been ruled out through history/testing/labs. Second, your symptoms sure sound like panic attacks so consider using Klonopin instead of xanax which will be harder to stop. Paxil (paroxetine) works best when combined with therapy like cbt to help you feel less anxious. ...Read more

Copd (Definition)

COPD may include chronic bronchitis, emphysema, or both. Chronic bronchitis is the production of increased mucus caused by inflammation. Bronchitis is considered chronic if you cough and produce excess mucus most days for three months in a year, two years in a row. Emphysema is a disease that damages the air sacs and/or the smallest breathing tubes in the lungs. ...Read more

Why can standing up fast or bending over cause a sudden COPD panic attack in which I can't catch my breath?

Why can standing up fast or bending over cause a sudden COPD panic attack in which I can't catch my breath?

Increased pressure: Bending causes increased pressure in the abdomen which is in turn transmitted to the lungs causing shortness of breath. Lungs with diminished reserves like in COPD are unable to adjust to that pressure increase. The standing up part is a different story. ...Read more

Why willstanding up fast or bending over cause a sudden COPD panic attack in which i can't catch my breath?

Why willstanding up fast or bending over cause a sudden COPD panic attack in which i can't catch my breath?

Two Answers: Standing up too fast causes the blood to stay in the lower parts of the body, dropping blood pressure to the brain. Dehydration makes it worse as do certain drugs. This is called orthostatic hypotension. Bending over with COPD changes the way blood and oxygen are exchanged in the lungs, like lying flat on one's back. That is called orthopnea. Breathing improves by propping up with pillows. ...Read more

Can asthma attack cause fast heart beat?

Can asthma attack cause fast heart beat?

Usually none: In otherwise young healthy individuals (no heart disease) the increased heart rate that can occur during an asthma attack or be related to treating an asthma attack (albuterol inhaler), will resolve on its own and not lead to heart problems. If the heartbeat, is irregular (skipping beats), associated with palpitations or greater than 180 beats per minutes, a heart doctor should be involved. ...Read more

Confusing: I know you're limited in the number of characters you can type, but your question is very confusing to me. (maybe it's my american english?) :) for your palpitations: there are many causes/kinds. You need a 24 hour holter recording to see what's actually happening. ...Read more

Suffer anxiety (panic attacks), could a fast heart beat lead to sudden death?

Not usually: Folks suffering from panic attacks may often think that they are having a heart attack and call 911 and go to the emergency department where they are told their heart is fine. There are good treatments available for panic disorder. In my practice, i try and control a patient's panic/anxiety symptoms without the use of benzodiazapines like xanax, (alprazolam) as they can be habit forming. ...Read more

Will hyperventilating during a panic attack cause lung overinflation? I read about it & got scared! Can it? I forced in more breath before I exhaled.

Not likely...: Overinflation can only happen if there is obstruction to airflow. If you have no underlying airway disease, then there is nothing to prevent the air you inhale from coming back out when you exhale. This will happen automatically and overinflation will not occur. If you have a lung disease which causes airway obstruction then overinflation can happen. Hope this helps!! Good luck!! ...Read more

Hyperventilation: Talk to your doctor or to a counselor about ways to think through the panic attacks. If that fails, there are medications that may be useful. Panic attacks do cause 'hyperventilation'/ rapid breathing and you may feel short of breath or have tingling in your face, hands or feet due to chemical changes in your blood from rapid breathing. Uncomfortable but not really dangerous in the short term. ...Read more

Prob panic attack: With a history of severe anxiety and OCD, it would not be surprising to have a panic attack as well. At your age, it is unlikely to be a heart or lung problem, but a physical exam and simple lab tests can figure that one out. If these attacks become more frequent or severe, you may need additional antidepressant medication and/or psychotherapy to deal with them. Usually chest Xrays /EKGs needed. ...Read more
