Oncologist recommended chemo pills & IV at same time for stage 4 colon cancer for 63 yr old female. Pros/cons?

Every medication: Or treatment has benefits and risks. Your oncologist has recommended this course of treatment based upon his extensive knowledge, education, and experience, and determined that this is the best course alternative. It is not a simple decision to recommend a course of treatment of a malignancy. If you have any doubts, you can always get a second opinion, but it sounds right to me. ...Read more

For what length of time can you live being elderly stage 4 colon cancer and renal failure and sepsis?

For what length of time can you live being elderly stage 4 colon cancer and renal failure and sepsis?

Sounds like serious: Illness. Of the conditions you mentioned, sepsis is probably the worst, because it means uncontrolled infection throughout the body. Next is renal failure, but dialysis can reverse some of the effects of it. Stage 4 colon cancer means widespread disease, so prognosis is poor. To have all of these conditions at one time in one person is quite ominous. ...Read more

However, management of the symptoms and sequelae can increase your quality and enjoyment of life, and increase disease free intervals so that you might have more 'good days.' i cannot stress enough the importance of rest, proper nutrition, positive outlook and attitude, and surround with supportive people! ...Read more

How can I support my mother who is suffering from stage IV colon cancer?

How can I support my mother who is suffering from stage IV colon cancer?

Help cancer patients: Also: if you can do it, go to doctor visits with her. Ask questions, take notes. The treatments for colon cancer often make it difficult to eat well. Help your mom find foods she can tolerate; see a nutritionist. Use both an oncologist and a gastroenterologist. The latter helps manage the function of the GI tract after chemo. Try to make fun memories; help her prepare a will if she needs one. ...Read more

Can a person live up to 5 years does it make a difference if you were diagnosed stage IV colon cancer than if were stage III but now hav a liver met?

No diff: The prognosis of someone diagnosed today with a liver metastasis of a colon cancer diagnosed a few years ago is not different from that of someone presenting today with newly diagnosed liver mets and primary colon cancer. Five year survival is not the rule, unfortunately, but I have seen many patients whose life exceeded five years after such a diagnosis. Treatment is improving rapidly. ...Read more

Is it possible to cure stage IV colon cancer that has limited number of mets to lung and liver?

Is it possible to cure stage IV colon cancer that has limited number of mets to lung and liver?

Hmmmm: You know, the terms "stage iv" and "cure" are not usually put in the same sentence by oncologists because in theory, most stage IV cancers are incurable. That said, I have seen a handful of patients who had a limited number of metastases to the liver or lung and are in remission years later after aggressive surgery and chemo. Don't lose hope. Best wishes. ...Read more
