Dad, Oscar, was told stage 4 lung cancer 2.5 wks ago. 1/3 sz brain tumor removed. 3 brain lesions. In bones&pos liver. Would u cyperknife brain tomorrow?

It depends: If you are 76, your Dad must be late 80s or early 90s. At such an advanced age it may not be worth being so aggressive with terminal cancer that at such advanced stage means he has only few weeks to few months left. However, if his desire is to be aggressive, Cyberknife is an effective an low risk procedure and I would recommend it highly. Otherwise, hospice care is very appropriate. ...Read more

Cancer (Definition)

Cancer is a group of diseases that is characterized by uncontrolled cell growth leading to invasion of surrounding tissues that spread to other parts of the body. Cancer can begin anywhere in the body and is usually related to one or more genetic mutations that allow normal cells to become malignant by interfering with internal cellular control mechanisms, such as programmed cell death or by preventing ...Read more

Can you advise me on going on vacation with lung cancer/brain tumors?

Live for Today: I am going to make some assumptions here so please know where I am coming from. If you have brain cancer from your lung cancer then you are unlikely to live much longer. If a vacation does not involve a foreign country where care is minimal. .. go for it. ...Read more

Why does lung cancer usually spread to the brain, thereby producing brain tumors?

Why does lung cancer usually spread to the brain, thereby producing brain tumors?

Brain Mets: (metastasis) as an entity comprise 100k per year. Lung cancer leads the league, but breast, melanoma, kidney are quite common. Prostate almost never. Only rhabdoid tumors in children commonly go to brain. This pattern stares at us, but baffles us as to why "organotropic" patterns of metastasis are so predictable. ...Read more

Stage 4 lung cancer no chemo tumor grew & cancer spread, clinical trial only now, on oxygen for sob, blood clots in legs, what is life expectancy?

Hard to say/depends.: At this stage of lung cancer, the options are limited as is survival. If treatment is done, it's usually chemotherapy and radiation and/or surgery after adjuvant chemotherapy. There are certainly trials out there and I would recommend talking to your doctor before starting any, but the chance for success is likely limited, as the 5 year survival of stage IV is <5%, but it doesn't hurt to try. ...Read more

My husband was diagnosed with lung cancer with metastatic to the brain, now there's a bleed on the brain what is his life expectancy?

Bad disease: Metastatic lung Cancer is a very bad cancer. An average patient can be expected to live between 4-12 months depending on how many sites of spread (besides the brain) he has and how mnay tumor nodules show up in his Brain scans. Patients with multiple brain metastases do poorly and may have even a shorter survival, sometimes just a few weeks unless his tumors shrink with the treatments offered to ...Read more

Serious, treatable: Someone with this problem (small cell cancer that has spread to the brain) is facing a very very difficult and serious health issue. It really needs to be discussed with ones doctor. This can be treated, but the details of the expected outcomes and things like that really need to be talked over with one's personal doctor. Every situation is a little different. ...Read more

Does lung cancer brain metastised tumors treated with the gamma knife extend survival if the tumors shrink and show no signs after a three month perio?

Does lung cancer brain metastised tumors treated with the gamma knife extend survival if the tumors shrink and show no signs after a three month perio?

A good sign: The use of gamma knife to treat brain tumor suggests the brain lesion was a small? Was it only one lesion? Siezure, headache? Decadron (dexamethasone)? It is hard to tell about overall survival. It is encouraging to know that the tumor shrank after 3 months of treatment how much shrinking? I presume that you are talking about the lung lesions. Enjoy today, count your blessings, let tomorrow worry about itself. ...Read more

Life expectancy for lung cancer gone to brain. Pet scan shows no other cancer now, only 1 tumor on brain. Surgery and whole brsin radiation will be?

"oligometastatic": Patients with a single brain tumor as the only site of metastatic disease are called "oligometastatic." the chance of cure, though small, is real. Every cancer specialist has a few such patients. I would strongly recommend aggressive treatment, including either radiosurgery (cyberknife, gammaknife, etc.) to the brain or surgical resection, and again stereotactic or chemoradiation to the lung. ...Read more

Functional status: First, I am so sorry for you and your family. Lung cancer can spread very quickly. You mentioned hospice had been called. In general, that is an option when an individual has a life expectancy of less than 6months. But remember, that is just a prognosis (guess/estimate) not a hard set fact. The most important factors are her function, such as her ability to stand, walk, eat, etc. ...Read more

Oncologist: I am very sorry that your mom is terribly ill. I hope she can recover from the side effects and have a better quality of life soon. The prognosis for stage IV lung cancer is poor. However, several factors are involved on a particular patient response to a given chemotherapy agent. Your oncologist can tell you the numbers for the protocol she is on. Does surgery improve life expectancy for patients with stage 3 lung cancer?

If so, not much: Albain et al tried to show that surgery improved survival in operable iiia, but there was no statistical benefit. The subset that got just a lobe removed possible benefited, but would need a larger study to prove. Those that had the entire lung removed actually faired worse. For most patients, it is not the thing that makes a difference, but response to chemo/rt signals benefit. ...Read more

Ask your doctor: Lung cancer usually shortens the life of the patient. If as you say the cancer is spreading and you've moved to an unproven clinical trial regimen, it depends on the effectiveness of the drugs and your health. Response is variable. I hope you are able to speak with your close friends and family members about your wishes for those times when you cannot speak. Sob on oxygen, that may be soon. ...Read more

Lung (Definition)

Deoxygenated blood enters the lungs from the right side of the heart and travels to the lungs. When you inspire, oxygen flows into the lungs, transverses the capilliares and attaches to hemoglobin down a gradient. At the same time, co2 diffuses into the capilaries and is expelled with exhalation. Oxygen rich blood then flows to the left side of the heart and into the ...Read more

Neoplasms (Definition)

"tumor" literally translates as "mass", so even a fresh bruise could be called a "tumor". Doctors use the term "neoplasm" (tranlates literally as new growth) to describe tumors that are abnormal growths of cells. These may be benign or malignant; "malignant" = cancer. In everyday usage, we use "tumor" ...Read more
