My mom has stage 4 small cell lung cancer in both lungs, in severe pain no biopsy no trtreatment what happens now ? Life expectancy?

Functional status: First, I am so sorry for you and your family. Lung cancer can spread very quickly. You mentioned hospice had been called. In general, that is an option when an individual has a life expectancy of less than 6months. But remember, that is just a prognosis (guess/estimate) not a hard set fact. The most important factors are her function, such as her ability to stand, walk, eat, etc. ...Read more

Lung (Definition)

Deoxygenated blood enters the lungs from the right side of the heart and travels to the lungs. When you inspire, oxygen flows into the lungs, transverses the capilliares and attaches to hemoglobin down a gradient. At the same time, co2 diffuses into the capilaries and is expelled with exhalation. Oxygen rich blood then flows to the left side of the heart and into the ...Read more

Mom was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in 6/12. They are unsure if it is small cell /non small cell. 1st chemo drug did nothing . Life expectancy?

Mom was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer in 6/12. They are unsure if it is small cell /non small cell. 1st chemo drug did nothing . Life expectancy?

Curious. Not good.: Rarely tumor cells can mutate in a way that it is difficult to differentiate between types of cells. First i'd make sure they have done all possible studies on the tumor cells to define its type. If first line chemotherapy did nothing then it's possible that trying ctx aimed at other type of lung cancer could identify its type and help moreso. Survival more than a 6-1mos is unlikely if no ctx. ...Read more

With stage 4 lung cancer, what is the life expectancy?

Greatly depends: That depends on many factors: the type of cancer, how much it has spread, whether it is responsive to treatment, whether you have received treatment, etc. Etc. It is important you get all the information you need that is accurate and helpful. ...Read more

My mom is 50 years a old and has been recently diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. What is life expectancy?

Can't be certain : There are many variables that affect survival. The lung cancer type and location. Younger people tend to live longer than older people with lung cancer. That being said, the median stage 4 non-small cell lung cancer life expectancy is about 8 months. Five year survival is only 1%. ...Read more
