Cancer can begin anywhere in the body and is usually related to one or more genetic mutations that allow normal cells to become malignant by interfering with internal cellular control mechanisms, such as programmed cell death or by preventing ...Read more
What is the life expectancy of a 78 year old, Stage 4 colon cancer spread to liver and lungs? Having chemotherapy (tablets) but losing weight.
Life expectancy: At 78, with stage IV colon cancer, the survival is about 4-6 months without treatment. With the new treatments combining chemo with biological drugs, survival times are in the range of 24-30 months. With a less aggressive treatment I estimate an AVERAGE survival of 9-12 months. Keep in mind these estimates are just a ball park figure, keep things one month at a time. ...Read more

Liver: Metastases would indicate stage 4 disease.Get a more detailed answer ›
It is possible: Several factors regarding colon cancer liver metastasis predict long term survival. Where the mets present when the original tumor was discovered? How many mets are present? Is the CEA level over 200? How large are the liver mets? How many lymph nodes were positive from the colon specimen? Can all of the liver lesions be removed or ablated? Are there metastasis present elsewhere ie: the lungs. ...Read more
Can a person live up to 5 years with stage IV colon cancer? 1 liver met and 1 node. Primary removed last year
Hmmmm: You know, the terms "stage iv" and "cure" are not usually put in the same sentence by oncologists because in theory, most stage IV cancers are incurable. That said, I have seen a handful of patients who had a limited number of metastases to the liver or lung and are in remission years later after aggressive surgery and chemo. Don't lose hope. Best wishes. ...Read more
Can a person live up to 5 years does it make a difference if you were diagnosed stage IV colon cancer than if were stage III but now hav a liver met?
No diff: The prognosis of someone diagnosed today with a liver metastasis of a colon cancer diagnosed a few years ago is not different from that of someone presenting today with newly diagnosed liver mets and primary colon cancer. Five year survival is not the rule, unfortunately, but I have seen many patients whose life exceeded five years after such a diagnosis. Treatment is improving rapidly. ...Read more

My colon cancer spread to liver. I have to see a nephrologist due to kidney damage. If organ damage prevents future treatment, what's approx lifespan?
Is a CEA lab result of a 4.4 a good indicator for stage 4 colon cancer that perhaps the cancer has not spread that much? Better survival rate?
No: Cea (carcinoembryonicantigen) is a protein that is released by some tumors into the bloodstream. It is useful for follow-up of cancer after treatment, ie, if the CEA is elevated before treatment and returns to normal after treatment, we are optimistic that the cancer was well-treated. If it then becomes elevated, we must search for recurrence. In your case, it is impt to know the # pre-rx. ...Read more
Are there any new cancer drugs for colon cancer spread to the liver? My father is very ill and needs help.
Consider new trials: If I were in your father's position, I would consider being in a research trial (if one is available) for metastatic colon cancer. None of the approved therapies for this is curative; they are all palliative. I would probably favor something with an immune-based approach rather than a cell poison, if any such trial is available. This is just a personal preference I'm voicing. ...Read more
If colon cancer was there several years n now removed - why only after surgery a liver met appears? All prior scans were showing no distant spread?
Not unusual.: It sometimes takes years for a metastasis in the liver or elsewhere to become large enough to be seen with the tests that we have available, such as CT scans or pet scans. If the metastasis is isolated and small, it may still be able to be treated. Be sure to discuss this in depth with your oncologist. Good luck. ...Read more
