Is stag 1 cirrhosis of the liver (due to alcohol) considered cancer. My MELD (model for end stage liver disease) score is 9-10 according to my doctor?

No

Cirrhosis_(liver)
Cirrhosis is not cancer. It is considered an end-stage fibrotic (scarring) process of liver following injury due to a variety of causes (alcohol, hepatitis C or B, biliary disease and a few other less common causes. It does put you at risk though of getting liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma). I am confused though by what you state: Do you have stage 1 fibrosis or stage 4 (cirrhosis)?

If you have cirrhosis or liver disease, can your enzymes go back to normal levels?

Sometimes

Transplant
It depends how bad the cirrhosis is. The liver is one of the body's best organs at regenerating. Also, a liver transplant can sometimes restore normal function.

Dr. Stuart Wasser answered:

How do i know if I have chronic liver disease and cirrhosis?

Are you sick?

Scarring
Cirrhosis (liver scarring) and chronic liver disease may exist, even if the underlying disease (like alcohol use) is over. In this case, the presence of old disease is less important than the risk of progressive disease. Liver tests, viral counts, bipsies etc all help evaluate this risk. Test of current liver function (like albumin and bleeding) are important to gauge current function

Dr. John J. Fung answered:

Diet for liver in case of cirrhosis stage B .would you recommend liver transplant or notnot?

See ur hepatologist

Liver
diet for patients with liver disease in part depends on the cause of liver disease. In general, avoid things that can further aggravate liver injury, such as alcohol. Reduce fatty food intake, go easy on salt and watch protein intake. Eat smaller amounts more frequently. The decision regarding transplant depends on the cause of liver disease and symptoms. You should see a liver doctor.

Dr. Ed Friedlander answered:

How and why is there an increase in urobilinogen levels in hepatocellular dysfunctions like alcoholic liver disease, cirrhosis and malignancy of liver?

Tricky concept

Liver
Urobilinogen is actually generated from the pigment in the feces and diffuses back into the bloodstream. Normally the liver removes it and puts it back in the gut. If the liver's not working hard enough, some will end up in the urine. It's a helpful bit of information.

Can you tell me if someone has cirrhosis and needs a liver transplant, how successful is the surgery?

Very successful

Cirrhosis_of_the_liver
There are about 6,000 liver transplants done in the US each year. The results for cirrhosis are quite good with nearly 90% survival 1 year, 70% at 5 years, and 50% at 10 years. If the cirrhosis was due to alcohol related liver disease, of course this is limited to those recovered alcoholics.
