I've got pneumonia and my doctor prescribed ceftin (cefuroxime). How fast does this medicine will work?
Depends: A lot depends or organism bacteria or mycoplasma or viral. If organism susceptible to antibiotic should start to feel better in 3 days. Some times complications of pneumonia such as empyema and extent of consolidation in lung enter into time of healing. Sometimes there can be progression because of lack of sensitivity of organism to antibiotic. Radiographs often define extent of the problem. ...Read more
Is there a drug interaction for Ceftin (cefuroxime) and Omeprazole? I am on ceftin (cefuroxime) 2x daily and Omeprazole 40mg daily. Can they be taken together?
Med interactions: According to a drug interaction check, the absorption level of the Ceftin (cefuroxime) may be affected by lowered stomach acid which is what omeprazole does. It appears that any medication that lowers the acid would have this affect (for example, Zantac or Pepcid). This would reduce the effectiveness of the Ceftin (cefuroxime). You may want to discuss this with the doctor who prescribed the Ceftin (cefuroxime) or your pharmacist. ...Read more

Had a sinus/ear infection since 5/23. Was given azithromycin & augmentin, neither drug was effective. I am taking ceftin, (cefuroxime) is this more effective?
Sinusitis: Hello, you are being treated in an appropriate pathway. Personally, I recommend a quinolone antibiotic such as Levaquin (levofloxacin) or Avelox after failing the previous two antibiotics. I also add a steroid by mouth to this regimen. Allergy testing may be helpful. You have had ear infections as well. Finally a ct scan of your sinuses would help, especially if you fail another abx. Good luck. ...Read more

I have gained weight due to Cefuroxime Axetile Torfur and I need to lose it fast. I exercise and have diet control. But no result. I need to lose Fat.
Energy balance: Corticosteroids, most anti-depressants, some anti-psychotics, mood stabilizers & diabetes meds can cause weight gain but cefuroxine doesn't. Exercise is great for your health but must be combined with caloric restriction for weight loss. Start a diet diary and do a calorie count. Then decrease portion sizes and eliminate "empty calories" like sodas. I recommend THE DUKE DIET book for more info. ...Read more
Some severe: Mostly stomach cramps and diarrhea for some people but people can have a severe allergic reaction, which causes breathing trouble and can even cause death, rarely seizures, a severe skin condition called toxic epidermal necrolysis and steven-johnson's syndrome. Most people do not have any trouble with it. I always recommend eating yogurt with an active culture to help the stomach issues. ...Read more

I have been using Ceftin (cefuroxime axetil) in penicillin allergic patients for years without any problem. You can safely take
ceftin. Other antibiotics that can be used are the fluoroquinolones such as Ciprofloxacin or levaquin (levofloxacin). The latter is more expensive but has a very low rate of bacterial resistance. ...Read more
Yes, no problem: These drugs won't interact. Since you obviously have access to the internet, you can find out for yourself about any drug interactions. Not the best choice: If due to bacteria sensitive to the cephalosporin antibiotics, cefuroxime should work fine. But knowing this requires a urine cuture with antimicrobial susceptibility testing if positive. If such testiing hasn't been done, this is a poor antibiotic choice. Normally a fluoroquinolone, e.g. levofloxacin. Or if under age 35, ceftriaxone + doxycycline for likely chlamydia or gonorrhea. ...Read more

Yes.: The killing pattern of antibiotics are determined by the mechanism of action. Some of us believe in the area under the curve such that a higher does at one time and slowly metabolized kills the organisms as they reach the maximum of activity. I am one who believes that b-lactams work better with constant exposure of the organisms cell walls so I give it more dosing a day. That is dependent of md. ...Read more
I was prescribed ceftin (cefuroxime) one dose every 24 hours. I took my dose 12hours late. I took another does at my normal time 12 hours later. Is this okay?
Yes: Being off-schedule on one day should not make a difference. One can just get back onto schedule and follow the schedule for the rest of the medication course. Ceftin (cefuroxime) is often dosed at twice a day... so if one is unclear on whether the instructions should be once a day or twice a day, just call the doctor's office when the office is open, to ask. ...Read more
