Chest xray: Many viral illnesses can cause symptoms for weeks, but with a continued cough and pain, I would worry about developing a pneumonia. It would be wise to get a chest xray to make sure there is not a worse infection going on

Go to ER: Considering your age possibilities include cardiac origin. Muscle strains won't hurt you, but cardiac events can. Best to have this type of pain checked out immediately. If you also have shortness of breath, call 911.

Muscle spasm?: It sounds like it could be muscle spasm. Apply heat to the area. Try using otc nsaids. Get a massage. If all that fails your pcp can prescribe a muscle relaxer for you.

Scapula Pain: Inflammation can occur underneath the shoulder blade where there is a bursa. This is called scapulothoracic bursitis and can be treated with therapy, NSAIDS, pain medications, and possibly a steroid injection. No trauma?: If you have not experienced a trauma, then the likely etiology of your pain is an irritated nerve in your neck. Anti-inflammatories and a formal course of physical therapy is the first line of treatment. An examination with an orthopaedic surgeon including xrays of both your neck and shoulder can help confirm the diagnosis.

No: This type of many can have several causes including localized issues such as strain or a rhomboid bursitis. Its origin can also be in the chest cavity. Have your doctor take a look.

Get screening: You definitely need to make sure all your screening diagnostic tests are upto date and negative. Thereafter consider a vacation, and a message. Placing something from freezer in a thin towel and placing on area will help. Maybe and I believe it is most likely muscle spasm from stress. A few options: Sharp pain in the periscapular area can be related to myofascial (muscle) strain, primarily rhomboid, serratus, and infraspinatus muscles. If the pain radiates toward the front, consider intercostal neuralgia (an irritation of the nerve associated with each rib). If the pain is at the upper shoulder blade radiating out toward the shoulder, it may be a suprascapular neuralgia.

Depending on other: Symptoms, it could be something serious, such as pulmonary embolism especially if your knee has bee immoblized, pleurisy, or even pneumonia. Or it could be shingles. Get to your doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment.

It depends: There are many possible causes. An irritation of a nerve in the thoracic pain can cause pain to radiate around one side of the trunk. A gallbladder problem can cause pain radiating into the right side as can a lung and kidney problem. A detailed exam and appropriate studies can usually tell the cause. Consider being checked. Pain management: Agood pain management specialist would be your best bet. These docs can be trained either in anesthesiology, physiatry, or neurology. Ask for a board certified interventional pain specialist. They would be able to differentiate between myofascial pain, and intercostal neuralgia.

Strain: Sounds like you may have a rib or upper back out of place. See your doctor and make an appointment with a chiropractor as well.

I woke up this morning with a sharp stabbing pain near my shoulder blade on my right side. It is constant pain, though gets worse when I breathe.

Be seen: I would be seen. While it could very well be musculoskeletal, pain in that area that is worse with breathing should be evaluated for possible cardiac and pulmonary causes, such as a pulmonary embolus for example.
