Depends: If sharp, deep, ache type pain..usually muscle. If electrical, burning, tingling..usually nerve. When it happens try keeping knee straight, gently/slowly move top of foot up towards the lower leg/'ankle...making ankle/foot at 90 degrees and hold this.
