St John Wort Vs Prozac
How long do u have to wait to start taking St. John wort after being on 10 mg prozac (fluoxetine)?
Prozac (fluoxetine) has a: long half-life and doesn't work its way into the nervous system at the proper depth to begin to alter mood for about 14 to 21 days, in most cases. Some folks think a month is not too long to wait. (This is not the same as the initial "rush" some patients experience as the drug first is introduced...) Quitting Prozac (fluoxetine) takes about the same time to leave the body, so give it 2+weeks to be safe. ...Read more

Took 20mg of Prozac (fluoxetine) for 8 mos. Been off for two weeks. Can i now take st. Johns wort. Didnt like side effects of prozac (fluoxetine)?
Would like to switch to st.Johns wort from 20mg of Prozac (fluoxetine) because of side effects been on Prozac (fluoxetine) for 8 mos. How soon could I do this?
Thirty-Five Days: Every medication has a half-life. This is the time it takes the body to eliminate one half of the med. I consider a medication to be eliminated after 5 half-lives. When the body begins to breakdown prozac, (fluoxetine) one of the byproducts is an active metabolite that has a half-life of 7 days. It takes about 35 days for total elimination. One should not take st. John's wort until Prozac (fluoxetine) is eliminated. ...Read more
What do you recommend if i take 20mg of prozac( fluoxetine) evert day for depression; yesterday i bought some st johns wort (5000mg tablets), can what do you recommend if i take them together?
Why?: If you are not happy with prozac, (fluoxetine) talk to your doctor. If you are not happy with your doctor, get another doctor. I don't understand why you bought st. John's wort before you know what to do with it? The issue here is not whether combining Prozac (fluoxetine) with st. John's wort is good idea for you. The even more important problem is how to repair your relationship with your doctor. ...Read more

Many: Please do not use St John's Wort as an antidepressant, the quantity and quality of the active ingredient in these preparations are unreliable and can be very dangerous. Fluoxetine (Prozac) is in the SSRI class as are citalopram, escitalopram and sertraline among others. SNRI class contains duloxetine and venlafaxine. Bupropion is in its own class. St. John's Wort may: decrease effects of Alprazolam; may interact with 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan) to increase risk of a rare but serious condition called serotonin syndrome; and may interact with some foods. These interactions may mimic anxiety/panic attacks. Consult prescriber regarding all medications and supplements to determine what is best for your situation. Don't try: It's one of the best, if not the most useful, of the herbals.
