I've sprained my ankle twice in the last 2 years. What are the chances I will have long term damage? Will those ligaments be weaker? Should I wear som

Yes to all.: There are sprained ankles and then there are really sprained ankles. It is possible that multiple ankle sprains can cause lasting damage if left untreated. The treatment is based on the severity of the sprains. Wearing an ankle support would offer some degree of protection, but ultimately an evaluation by a foot and ankle specialist may be in order.

Should I get an MRI on ankle? Sprained my ankle twice in about a week, pain and swelling 8 months later. Is their possible structural damage?

First, a doctor: MR is not always needed. First, I would see an orthopedic surgeon who deals with the foot & ankle or see a podiatrist. He or she will determine if imaging is needed. If no X-ray has been done, then X-ray will most likely be first to look at the bones and joints. If more information is needed, then MR.

Not w/o pain: If you have pain from the noted difference in ankle anatomy right vs left, the yes its a problem. If no pain and no limitation of movement, then no worries. It could be scar tissue or a bone callous. If problematic, see a podiatrist or orthopedist.

"RICE": Rest, ice, compression and elevation. But not for more than 48 hours. If your pain and swelling persists after that, you need to be seen by a doctor. A word of caution with the advil: if you have a fracture, continually taking anti-inflammatory medication will delay fracture healing. It's ok to take 1 or 2 every other day or so, but until you know you don't have a fracture, don't load up on them.

How does ice help a sprained ankle?

How does ice help a sprained ankle?

To ice or not.: After tissue damage, the body engages defensive mechanism known as the inflammatory response. To control blood loss, initially, there is severe constrictions of the blood vessels injured in the area. This is where ice helps with the injury. It aids the body in minimizing fluid loss to keep swelling to a minimum. The problem is, if too much cold is applied too long, the healing can be slowed.
