Ankle sprain: Normal healing of a sprained ankle takes several weeks (on average). If its a chronically sprained ankle with constant pain and instability, it will take longer than a "normal" sprain. Yes, a sprain can get worse. Progress as tolerate: Unless it was a massive tear of your tendon/ligament, you should do weight bearing as tolerated. Don't wait till it's all gone. If you can put weight without excessive pain, then start walking on it carefully.
