I have had a sprained ankle for three weeks and its still mildly swollen and causes me some pain some pain what should I do?

It may take months: Ankle/foot sprains are known to last longer than other parts of body because of their weight-bearing nature on every step you take. Mild sprain may last couple of wks, but severe ones may take months, good shoes/cushions, ankle support/aircast/braces may help. Elevate when u can. Motrin/aleve may easy pain/inflammation. If persistent/more severe, consult doc. My ankle sprain x5 months-still sore. ...Read more

How long should I wear the compression bandage for? Sprained ankle 2 weeks ago. Still hurts a little not nearly as bad. Only A tiny bit swollen now

How long should I wear the compression bandage for?
Sprained ankle 2 weeks ago. Still hurts a little not nearly as bad. Only A tiny bit swollen now

A good Start.: Still a little pain and swelling means that the ankle is still unstable. Two weeks is not enough time for a sprain of any substance. You may have to go 4 to 6 weeks for optimum recovery. Of course this is only guess work since you have not disclosed the severity of the sprain. You might try a little heat to speed the healing up. ...Read more

I had a high ankle sprain from basketball in september and its still swollen in january...Why?

Ortho evaluation now: If you have not already been evaluated by a sports medicine or fort and ankle orthopaedic specialist, you need to seek such an evaluation now. Most high ankle sprains, though slow to heal, should be resolved by 4 months. Stress x-rays and MRI may be indicated. You could have a concomitant injury to the cartilage within your ankle joint (mri best), and/or residual instability (stress x-rays). ...Read more

Sprained ankle 4 weeks ago still swollen and pain that shoots up my leg at times. hurts to put a little weight on it?

Perhaps: Yu should be suing crutches and not stepping on the ankle which sounds like its not a simple strain but rather a grade two or three. Ice as often as possible. Keep it elevated when possible. Is it wrapped up? If not, sounds like it should until the immediate swelling goes down. Walking on a badly sprained and can lead to chronic lateral ankle instability. ...Read more

Sprained ankle 3 weeks ago still swollen and in pain is this normal in recovery? Have been using the price method and keeping it wrapped in banadge

Ankle Sprain: Not unusual to have it last 3 weeks, may last as long as 6-8 weeks if bad enough sprain. Some times sprains are significant enough to cause instability of the ankle. Physical therapy can help with the functional recovery from your ankle sprain and help prevent future sprains. Continue your current conservative care. Add range of motion exercises. If difficult in couple weeks get evaluated. ...Read more

No: If you had a grade 3 sprain of your ankle ( severe) then you shouldn't expect much improvement @ 4 days.Swelling, discoloration are the norm. @ 2 wks you should be better but it may take 4-6 wks. For it to resolve.Consider seeing an orthopedic surgeon for evaluation, x-rays to rule out a fracture and treatment guidelines.Best of luck! ...Read more

How long does the swelling of a sprained ankle persist? I sprained my left ankle for the second time and after almost 5 weeks it is still swollen.

Depends: Swelling in the ankle can persist for many months if nothing is done to rehab the muscles around the ankle. I would start doing calf raises and light jogging on a treadmill for short distance to regain proper balance and function. ...Read more

Had a very severe ankle sprain 6 wks ago with massive swelling. Still very swollen, have start up pain, and crepitus when moving it. What is this ?

Expected swelling: It is common to have residual ankle swelling after a severe sprain. Ligament injury can take many weeks to fully heal and may result in residual ankle instability. Formal physical therapy, supportive shoe wear, compression hose and elevation of the ankle at the end of the day are helpful. Rarely ligament reconstruction is necessary if persistent sprains occur and nonoperative measures fail. ...Read more

Ankle sprain for 6 weeks now and it's still swollen and I'm still in pain. And when I sprained it I heard a crack got a X-ray no break there any sugg?

See your doctor: Hi Peter, Sorry your ankle is hurting. The one thing I'd like to share is that an initial xray is not foolproof. You can have a break that isn't visible at first. Ongoing pain could be that your ankle needs more rest, but most physicians would recommend repeat imaging to be on the safe side. It may be a tendon rather than a bone that is injured. Good luck, hope it's better soon. ...Read more

I had a grade 2 or 3 ankle sprain 4 weeks ago, played on it 8 days later and now it is still swollen and painful. should I go to a doctor?

Sliding Scale: After 4 weeks or is it 3 weeks, it depends on the initial trauma date or the secondary trauma date, and it is still swollen and painful. Go figure. The swelling in your ankle is telling you this needs to be immobilized and right soon. Crutches would be nice until you can see an expert and have him (her) offer up a considered opinion and treatment plan. ...Read more
