Breakthrough bleed: Breakthrough bleeding (bleeding at the wrong time) is very common on birth control. It happens in about 1/3 of users. Its no big deal and usually self corrects over time. Taking the pill at different times can give different hormone levels and lead to spotting. If you also have lower pelvic pain, it may be a uterine infection called metritis that may require oral anabiotics. In general, this is nothing serious. If it persists, seek an M.D. ...Read more

Can do a preg. test: Home pregnancy tests are very accurate and not affected by foods, herbs, common illnesses, sexually transmitted diseases, or medications. A correctly done urine test gives a reliable result 3 weeks after sex (3 weeks after when conception might have happened). If done sooner, a positive result is likely real, but a negative result may be due to testing too soon. ...Read more

Does bleeding after plan b, whether it's my period or spotting, mean the pill has worked or should I still be concerned for pregnancy? I took plan b J

Can do a preg. test: Plan B can alter the menstrual-type bleeding for the cycle in which Plan B was taken, and sometimes the next cycle too. One should be sure to check a home pregnancy test about 3 weeks after sex, because Plan B works most of the time, but not all the time. Again, emergency contraceptive pills work most of the time, not all of the time. ...Read more

Normal pap few years ago. I spot a few days before every period. I was put on birth control and it helped the spotting. If it was cervical cancer or endometriosis causing the spotting- would the pill hide the symptoms of them? Next pap soon

Probably not cancer: If you had a pelvic exam when the pill was prescribed, cervical cancer would have been obvious on examination. Even if not examined, a normal pap smear "a few years ago" makes cancer very unlikely. Your next pap smear will tell for sure. Endometriosis usually causes pelvic pain especially during menstruation, not just spotting. The pill won't interfere with diagnosing either one. ...Read more
