When you inspire, oxygen flows into the lungs, transverses the capilliares and attaches to hemoglobin down a gradient. At the same time, co2 diffuses into the capilaries and is expelled with exhalation. Oxygen rich blood then flows to the left side of the heart and into the ...Read more

A full x-ray is the: Next step. A CT or MRI may follow. Usually a cancer diagnosis requires a piece of tissue be put under a microscope to see if it is benign or malignant. Be sure to follow-up with these diagnostic tests. If he has a prior chest x ray to compare it to this new full x-ray, it is very helpful to the Radiologist. Get that to the Radiologist, if possible. Surely, a thoracic surgeon must know if a round spot is a lung nodule, carcinoid or a coin lesion by looking at pet, CT and x-rays. Yes or no?

Pathology specimen: The pathologist makes the diagnosis with the microscopic exam of a piece of the lesion. Even then, it can be challenging to get diagnosis. So the answer to your question is no. Stay with your thoracic surgeon, get your follow up exams, stop nicotine if you have that addiction. Ok to go for a second opinion. Take a friend with you and don't be surprised if you get same answer. ...Read more

Strep test was negative but lung x-ray showed bronchitis. Is that what's causing my throat to be sore with white spots? Dr prescribed augmentin

Strep test was negative but lung x-ray showed bronchitis. Is that what's causing my throat to be sore with white spots? Dr prescribed augmentin

Maybe: If the spots were there before the augmentin, then very likely. If they appeared after starting the antibiotic, it may be oral thrush. If you are prone to vaginal yeast infections after taking antibiotics, then thrush is even more likely. If your throat does not get better by the time you finish the augmentin, I would recommend you go back to see your Dr. ...Read more

I have a chest X-ray with me and radiologist told me that I have a calcified focus in right apex. Is there any way that we can remove that spot?

Monitor only: There is a good chance this is an inactive process that needs only occasional monitoring. Removal of such a focus would entail excision of the involved lung segment and the potential for significant complications and scarring. Not a good plan. ...Read more

What can cause dark spots on a chest x-ray? There are several black spots on my chest x-rays. I thought tumors where white, so what could these be?

What can cause dark spots on a chest x-ray? There are several black spots on my chest x-rays. I thought tumors where white, so what could these be?

The: The first thing to know about a chest x-ray is that dark things represent air or fat, which white things represent fluid, tissue, and bone. Therefore, "dark spots" on a chest film, especially if they are in the lungs, most likely represent holes. Lungs with a lot of disease--especially in smokers--can develop large cavities called bullae. Dark spots in the ribs or the bones of the spine and shoulders may represent destructive processes like infection or tumor. When people talk about "spots" on a chest film they're usually talking about white spots. White spots in the lungs can be caused by pneumonia or other infections, areas of partial lung collapse, or tumors. Extremely white spots can represent calcium deposits, as are often present iin the arteries of people with vascular disease and in the lining of the chest wall in people with asbestos exposure. Chest films can be some of the most challenging xrays to read, because just about every disease out there causes some kind of abnormality in the chest. The list of differential diagnoses (that is, the possible causes of an abnormality) is very long. ...Read more
