What is the cause and effect of spitting up of a brown or black mucus? I've been spitting up a dark brown to almost a black mucus. I do smoke. I am trying to quit.

Its from smoking: The "tars" - all the hydrocarbons and organic crud in cigarette smoke (you know the stuff that turns the filter and your fingers dark yellow and brown) is trying to get out. You need to quit. As the famous philosopher yoda from star wars said - there is no try, there is just "do". See your doctor for evaluation, you may have COPD and need treatment, and see if there is lung infection/bronchitis. ...Read more

Lately I have been spitting some mucus that has brown in it. Does the brown color mean anything?

Depends on amount: The change in color can be old blood. I would recommend a cxr and a visit to your doctor. Sometimes c-diff can cause immunological issues and need to be followed up on (systemic). Also if this is new and the amount worse should be evaluated. You do not mention smoking history so if you smoke or did then need to see your primary md. ...Read more

Can it take up to 12 weeks to start spitting black & brown mucus after quitting? I haven't started coughing up any tar yet.

At least a few: After discontinuing smoking it does take a while to get the normal cells (ciliary mucosa) back to functioning. And then it can take even longer for the chemicals and materials to be expectorated. It can take months. Some will never come up. Do not let this fool you into restarting. Stick with it and you will feel better. ...Read more

Possibilities...: How long has he been coughing? If it is less than 3 weeks, he likely has acute bronchitis. He may need a sputum culture to determine what the etiology is and to see if the organisms in his sputum are sensitive to ampicillin. If he has had this for more than 3 weeks, he may have chronic bronchitis, a form of COPD usually due to smoking. If he is not feeling better, he needs to go back to his doctor. ...Read more
