I am A frequent marijuana smoker (2-3 times per day) and have a saliva based mouth swab drug test coming up soon. How long should I stop smoking for?

Depends: You are asking doctors how to beat a drug test! I would think you may not get much help here. Often, employers drug test hires because the job they are applying for requires attention. There may be a safety concern or a quality control concern. In any case, most doctors, myself included, are not likely to want to help you¨fool¨a drug test, unless total abstinence was your plan going forward! ...Read more

I have stop smoking almost 1 year. I have problem with my phlegm. It's thick green and comes which black stain. My chest hurt when coughing.

This is a question: For a medical doctor--pulmonologist, GP, even an ENT. Not smoking for a year suggests that your lungs are probably in much better shape than your symptoms suggest. An X-ray or CT might be good. You need a thorough diagnostic. ...Read more

Stop smoking at 11:59pm on 03-04-16, I have a blood, urine and mouth test for nicotine. The test is between 3-14/18-2016 will I pass?

Yes, although...: Nicotine stays in urine and saliva for up to 4 days.
A metabolite, cotitine, is detectable in blood for up to 10 days, so you should pass (there's a very slight chance of a positive in blood if done the 14th).
Congratulations on stopping smoking; while you may have done it to pass this test PLEASE don't resume. Smoking is one of the worst things for your health!

Everyone is: Different but setting target date to stop and then stopping completely on that day can be effective. Learning some self-hypnosis can support this plan of action. Chewing gum or eating mints is useful, especially at high risk times like coffee breaks. Peace and good health. See doc to examine your lips. ...Read more

Sore throat in the morning, rarely have light brown mucus, usually happens after I smoke and stop smoking for a few days. Cold symptoms present?

Depends: Sporadic smoking can cause sore throat. Any amount of smoking can cause an increase in mucus production that could be off-white, greenish, brownish or clear. If you are feeling fine otherwise, then you most likely don't have a cold virus. If however you have a fever, chills, disruptive cough or other concerns, then you could have a cold or pneumonia and should see a healthcare provider. ...Read more

I have had a horrible taste in my mouth for three months. It tastes like hairspray. What could this be? I quit smoking around this time.

Surprisingly (to me): This hairspray taste in the mouth has been reported by others...usually associated with pregnancy! Other reported causes are hormonal medications (birth control pills), certain antibiotics, some vitamins, very dry mouth, bleeding gums. Anxiety with dry mouth can also contribute. I'm not sure how quitting smoking might be related. Drink lots of water. Ask dentist/doctor next time you're in ...Read more

CalledDetermination,: If successful. Many find both difficult. Writing very detailed lists, ongoing updating them about WHY you do what you do, though they drive results you are not happy with, would be a first step in understanding yourself, motivations & noticing options you might like better. Also, after finding options you like better, emphasizing/allowing&recruiting rewards for these new choices routinely helpful. ...Read more

I've tried to stop smoking a few times in the past but I always got ill. Can I somehow prevent this so I won't have high temp and flu symptoms?

When one is Ill: Smoking to treat an illness is the very definition of crazy. Thinking that when you stop smoking you get ill and need to smoke is your brain lying to you. It is very common for those quitting smoking to get a cough and other signs of illness because their lungs finally can begin to heal and clean out all of the poisons and tars in them. You must get some help for the illnesses if they come. ...Read more

Why does my upper chest or bronchs vibrate when exhaling hard? There's no phlegm/mucus/cough. Quit smoking pot recently but never smoked cigs. Normal?

Impossible to say: You need a physical examination of your chest, and may need additional tests, such as a chest x-ray, to really give an answer. Often, some obstruction in the upper airway, like a polyp or an aspirated foreign body, can cause such sounds, but usually there will be cough, sputum, mucus etc. You need to be examined if it is bothering or worrying you. ...Read more

Unlikely: COPD takes years to develop so this is probably not that. This is probably combination of allergies and poorly controlled asthma. If I quit smoking, why am I not coughing up any more phlegm?

Phlegm: First: congratulation on quitting smoking! Now, a decrease in mucus production could be related to the overall improved environment in your lungs now that they don't have to cope with the stress of smoking. None the less, former smokers should pay close attention to their respiratory tracts and report any real changes to their primary doctor in addition to getting routine exams. Good luck! ...Read more
