A fracture is a broken bone. As there is cartilage at the end of many bones at the joint, a fracture may also include a break in the cartilage. Fractures and broken bones are the same thing. It seems that many believe that a "fracture" is a lesser injury or an incomplete break in the bone, but this is not correct. Fractures may be displaced or ...Read more

Buddy Tape: Usually for these types of fractures, unless they are displaced (your toe sticks out), we recommend "buddy taping" the toe to the next toe. Place a thin piece of cotton or gauze between the toes first. Fractures can take up to 6 weeks to heal and the toe may stay swollen for several months. If the toe is displaced you may need to see a foot specialist. Wear a stiff shoe (eg running shoe). ...Read more

I was told I have a hairline fracture in periosteum of pinky toe. What does that mean? I thought the periosteum was just a fibrous membrane?
You are right: You are right in saying that is not perfect terminology. The doctor may be implying that either you sustained a small occult fracture or that you injured the periosteum which can occur in a bone contusion. Either way, sound like a minor injury which should do well quickly. ...Read more

Not a good idea...: It sounds to me like you will just keep re-injuring it if you don't give it a chance to heal properly. The only thing to do is give it time - probably four weeks at least. ...Read more
Foot pain while running a long outside of foot for a while (from just under pinky toe to mid foot) after a long run brushing and swelling on outside of foot near pinky toe, bunionette or possible stress fracture?
Depends on...: How well the fracture is reduced and which bone is involved. For example, a spiral fracture of a metacarpal might not cause much deformity when the fingers are extended, but may cause the injured finger to cross its neighbor upon making a fist. Other deformities are possible. See a hand surgeon to assure the best healing and to minimize complications. ...Read more
My fifth toe is swollen & red & I cant bend it down or walk on it cause of an injury but x ray doesn't show fracture so what's the problem?
I had a displaced fracture of proximal phalanx of fifth toe two weeks ago. I am giving exams however, my foot swells a lot and has turned blue.?
Moving Along.: From your description, your toe is not hurting. Well not as much as it was two weeks ago. The blue coloring can occur from all the collateral damage incurred during the original injury. Normally, this clears up in time. I would think that a displaced toe would still be swollen even after two weeks. Your body is not satisfied that the fracture is stable and is using swelling to help. ...Read more
I had a displaced fifth toe fracture 3 days ago reduced with buddy taping. I cant hang my foot down, results in severe pain. How should I walk?
Not my buddy: Since you mention displaced fracture and buddy taping, it sounds like it has already been examined, x-rayed and splinted by a pro. If not, do it. When a bone breaks blood to the bone increases, increasing the pressure. When you hang it down, the pressure increases more. That increases pain. Elevate it. The taping may be slowing the blood out of toe increasing pain. Adjust it. Use fx shoe, crutch. ...Read more
When should I start walking after fifth toe displaced fracture? Ten days and still hurts when I lower my foot. New bruises also sprang up in foot
Maybe a second look.: I would think that ten days is enough time to allow you to walk with some mild to moderate pain. Since you are seeing new bruising something else should be considered. While enjoying the toe fracture, did you fracture something else that is now affecting you recovery. You need to get the foot x-rayed and check for other fractures. Nsaids should take the edge off and perhaps an accommodating shoe. ...Read more
I had fifth toe fracture last week. Yesterday I noted a large bruise in the centre of foot extremely painful and is not letting me hang my foot/walk?
You hit your toe against something hard enough to break it. My guess is, you hit the rest of the foot hard also, but didn't notice it because the toe hurt so much. Now it's badly bruised.
