I have possible CSF leak. Everytime I bend over, or push, for the past yr, after a 2 mo. Headache and spinal tap, I hear a thump in one ear. Csf leak?

Difficult question: Not exactly sure of the history, but it seems that you are saying that you hear a thump in the ear when you bend or push. There was a 2 month history of headache and spinal tap. This is unusual and is not the typical symptom of CSF leak. That is usually headaches when you stand up with improvement when you lay down. There are some special MRI studies that can check for CSF hypotension. ...Read more

If everybody has brain fluid and spinal fluid, what would make somebody need a shunt to get rid of fluid?

If everybody has brain fluid and spinal fluid, what would make somebody need a shunt to get rid of fluid?

Great question: Fluid is constantly being made in the brain. In a normal person, it is made and drained at the same rate. In some people, they either produce too much or it drains too slowly, requiring an artificial drain (shunt) to relieve the pressure. ...Read more

Chronic rihnnoisis sound more possible than CSF leak even with slight head trams with a drip and ear acting up with fluid?

Why CSF Leak?: Why do you think you might have a CSF leak? Have you hit your head? If you have a reason to think that you have a CSF leak, the first thing to determine is if that is true or not with a CT or MRI. If you have no reason, then allergic rhinitis is more likely, and try an antihistamine and reducing environmental irritants/allergens, like fragrances, smoke, dust, etc. If that does not work see MD. ...Read more

Is it true that a spinal fluid leak after surgery is the surgeons fault?

Vague?? but no: What kind of surgery are you referring to? With many neurosurgical procedures, CSF leak is a risk, especially if the CSF space itself was entered as a part of the operation. These leaks are not uncommon, sometimes even a normal part of healing, and usually resolve with proper treatment. I encourage you to review your concerns with your surgeon. Your surgeon is in the best position to help you. ...Read more

Woke up with a headache, pain gets worse when I stand up. This type of headache happens maybe 10-15 times/year, type of migraine or spinal fluid leak?

Different items: Papilledema is a sign of increased intracranial pressure of any etiology, and can be due to tumor, hydrocephalus, brain hemorrhage, infections. Swelling of the optic nerve can be due to optic neuritis or other inflammatory problems. Spinal fluid leaks can be due to trauma over skull such as cribiform plate fracture. Can spinal fluid come out from your nose after a neck injury? Was in a head lock while being assaulted and was squeezing my neck very hard for about 45 seconds.

This: This less likely than if you were struck in the midface. Cerebral spinal fluid (CSF) can leak from the nose due to fracture of a thin plate of bone above the nose called the cribiform plate. This type of leak is usually due to a direct blow to the midface. ...Read more

How do you know if you're leaking CSF? I had some clr liquid running suddenly from my right nostril when I was leaning forward. Head hot, eyes/ears hurt.

CSF leak? Docs checked nothing, hit head then & just I have a drip in throat and ear is a little weird but all were checked and nothing weeks of drip

Drip: If you hit your head hard enough, if the drip is salty or if there is fluid behind the eardrum, you need a CT scan of the sinuses and ear. If you tilt your head forward and there is a drip out of the nose that fluid can be analyzed. Be sure to see an ENT ...Read more

Have small leak, right ear - possible csf, but ENT says no perforation in ear drum via otoscope, so not csf. I don't have infection. Can a perforation be so small it can't be seen by otoscope?

I have chronic severe ear infection w/csf leak since brain decompression for chiari malformation. Could inner ear & ear bones be malformed also?

Unlikely: Unless your inner ear was involved in the surgery or you were born with inner ear or ear bone malformations, the inner ear and ear bones were likely unaffected from surgery. A suboccipital decompression typically does not affect the inner ear or ear bones. I would consult your otologist for a more precise answer. ...Read more

Why the ER?: Intracranial hypertension is NOT an emergency. Using the ER as a walk-in clinic is a MISuse of the ER and ER staff. Why are you posting that question here? You can't just order up an LP. You and your doctor together properly should decide if you need one. Ask him/her when you need one. Your doctor can then schedule it as an outpatient procedure ("day surgery"). Would an intermittent csf leak not be provoked by cisternogram? As Head is tilted down would this not put pressure on dura?

Possible.: Intermittent CSF leak of the head can be missed if it is so minimal and very infrequent even if the head is not tilted down. However, the head is tilted down in a cisternogram because the nuclear medicine dye must be directed into the ventricles of the head in order for the dye to be seen leaking out of the head. Otherwise, the dye will travel down the spine and give a negative test. ...Read more

Experiencing itchy nose and eyes, a stye that is healing now and a clear watery liquid dripping from nose. What could this be? I just moved to a colder climate in norway but the nose dripping scared me. Might this be csf leak? No head trauma.

It very likely is: Simple rhinorrhea: runny nose from allergies, a cold, exposure to cold temperatures such as you suggest. The fact that you also have itchy nose and eyes suggests allergy/hay fever as a cause which would not be unusual when you find yourself in a new environment with new potential antigens/allergens. Intractable migraine: In CSF leak the headache is worse when you sit up and improves when you lie down. Visit ER.
