What can injure the spinal cord?

What can injure the spinal cord?

Spinal cord injury: Anything that can cause pressure, gradually or suddenly, may injure the spinal cord. That would include arthritis, herniated disc, tumor, infections. Instability would allow the cord to be stretched or bruised: after trauma, rheumatoid arthritis, surgery. Vascular abnormalities could interfere with spinal cord circulation like a stroke. Abnormal spinal fluid flow could cause internal cord damage.

Could dr. Reconnect nerves to my spinal cord?

Not yet I am: Sorry to say. This is something medicine is working on very hard right now with stem cells and grafts, but the science just is not there yet.

How can they not pierce the spinal cord in an lp?

TECHNIQUE: The lumbar puncture is performed below the level of the spial cord. The nerve roots are usually mobile and are pushed out of the way by the needle.

Can you please tell me functions of the spinal cord?

Can you please tell me functions of the spinal cord?

Contains the nerves: Which go to your muscles of your body and also to the sensory receptors in your body. You have a complex nervous system which has sympathetic, parasympathetic and yoru sensation and motor control. These neurons and axons are in the spinal cord and control your body. It transmits the electrical impulses which control yoru bodies functions and muscles.

My spinal cord simulator is recalled. Would you recommend I have it removed?

My spinal cord simulator is recalled. Would you recommend I have it removed?

SCS replacement: Spinal cord stimulator includes two parts, lead and generator. If your generator is recalled, it's a simple replacement. If the leads are recalled, it can be replaced too, but more complicated. The more important question is how well it works for your pain. If it works well, you should have it replaced. If it doesn't work well, talk to your doctor to see if it can be reprogrammed before removal.

What is spinal cord stimulation?

Neuromodulation: SCS directs electrical current to the spinal cord or spinal nerves. There are many different proprietary wave forms and energy sources on the market to provide this stimulation. This modulation of different nerve fibers using electricity to produce pain relief is called neuromodulation. This is most effective in nerve related pain. The most common use is for patients who have had spinal surgery.

What is spinal cord stimulation like?

What is spinal cord stimulation like?

Electrifying!: Spinal cord stimulation performed for relief of chronic pain involves insertion of electrodes in the back part of the spinal canal. These are guided up to a level at which pain reduction occurs upon administration of a small electric current. Spinal cord stimulation is rarely done for other purposes in routine practice.

Can you tell me what a spinal cord injury is?

Can you tell me what a spinal cord injury is?

Spinal cord injury: Is an injury to the actual cord of portions of neurons that extend from the base of your brain down the spinal canal and send the nerves to the rest of your body from the brain. The actual injury can be numerous mechanisms, from anything from trauma to infection to infarct, severing communication of some degree from your brain to the levels below the injury.

How can shattering the spinal cord kill you?

How can shattering the spinal cord kill you?

Autonomic system: In addition to carrying nerve pathways that control the movement of muscles and sensation from the arms, legs, and trunk, the spinal cord also supplies the muscles responsible for respiration. More importantly, it carries sympathetic and parasympathetic fibers that control heart rate, blood pressure, and influence breathing patterns.

How is a spinal cord injury typically diagnosed?

How is a spinal cord injury typically diagnosed?

Multiple ways: A thorough history, physical examination, and review of the appropriate imaging studies can lead to a diagnosis of spinal cord injury. Sometimes further nerve testing and spinal fluid sampling may be necessary.

What's the most common tumor of the spinal cord?

What's the most common tumor of the spinal cord?

Metastatic tumors: By incidence, the most common tumors that affect the spinal cord (sc) are metastatic (55%; from lung, breast, prostate or lymphoma). Looking at the sc from superficial to deep, the next layer affected are tumors within the dural sac but out of the sc (40%). These include schwannomas and meningiomas. Last layer are tumor within the sc (about 5%), which include astrocytomas and ependymomas.
