Looking for info on sphenoid sinus disease/surgery for 8 yr old. Ped ENT observed for 1 yr & has worsened, now surgery. How rare is this procedure?
It depends: Sphenoid sinus disease that causes symptoms such as headaches should be operated on if it does not respond to antibiotics. If there are no symptoms, it probably isn't necessary to do surgery unless the doctor is concerned that there is a mass in the sinus, instead of just swelling or infection. ...Read more
CT says "Frothy secretion is present which is not layering dependently in the right sphenoid sinus. The appearance would be more consistent with sinus disease than blood products. What does this mean?
Its sounds although you have intractable sinus disease. Given your prior hx:

If the sphenoid sinus is opacifying increasingly on an interval, can it ever go away and become clear on its own?
Retention cyst: Retention cysts are found often on MRI scans of the brain. These cysts are usually benign incidental findings that arise from the mucosa in the sinus. When they get large, they can cause some headache from irritation of the surrounding structures. In the abscence of a history of infection with drainage, the cause of these cysts is debated. Treatment is usually conservative. ...Read more
It is so rare: I think it would be difficult to say. My guess is that you were having a CT scan or MRI for some facial or sinus symptoms and this was incidentally reported. It would have been present your whole life...it is the result of lack of development in the embryo/fetus. Reportedly it occurs in only 0.026% of people..too few to study. The presence of this shouldn't impact your evaluation or treatment. ...Read more

What does interval opacification of the sphenoid sinus mean? Differences between the different sinuses?
