Diet for diverticulitis?

Diet for diverticulitis?

Early vs. Late: Acute diverticulitis is associated with swelling of the colon that may create a temporary partial blockage of the colon. Therefore, we often advocate no food or just liquids during the initial phase of treatment. When food is resumed, it is common to recommend a low-residue diet early on. After the inflammation resolves, we often recommend high-fiber diets, which may reduce the risk of recurrence.

Like all life on planet humans are open systems which keep tearing down their structure & require intake of atoms/molecules from which to rebuild their structure. Which type of diet is advisable for a patient with diverticulitis?

Which type of diet is advisable for a patient with diverticulitis?

Diverticulitus: Diverticulitis means an active infection of small pouches of the colon that needs treatment with antibiotics. With an active infection, foods should be small and very light, liquids & a few sift foods until the infection has resolved. Then later your doctor would start you on high fiber foods after infection has fully resolved.

How many days would I stay on a bland diet following a diverticulitis attack?

How many days would I stay on a bland diet following a diverticulitis attack?

Depends: It depends on how bad the attack is. Sometimes diverticulitis attacks are bad enough that they require hospital admission with IV antibiotics. Sometimes they can be treated with antibiotics by mouth as an outpatient. If the attack is bad you might be kept nothing by mouth for a few days. Or it is possible that you could be kept on clear liquids for a few days while the attack resolves.

I have diverticulitis and am currently on a low residue diet. Is milk a low residue drink?

I have diverticulitis and am currently on a low residue diet. Is milk a low residue drink?

Yes: If you temporarily are on a low fiber diet, the easiest way to follow that diet is no fruits, no vegetables, no whole grains! Meat, fish, chicken and dairy are fine. You may have white rice and white bread. Only exceptions to fruit/veggies is mashed potatoes and non chunky apple sauce. Not a healthy diet in the long run but necessary in the short (4-6weeks) to allow the colon to heal and recover.

You have choices: Either your pain is from some other source or the diverticulitis is still active. You could ask your doc for more investigation and testing or get further antibiotics to treat it. Consider going to discuss issues with a surgeon or gastroenterologist (or both.).

Is pork OK for diverticulitis attack, after solids have began. Is there a way to get a detailed diet list. Not just the generic short list.

Pork okay: The truth is that there is not a specific diet for diverticulitis. You can find some online but there is no evidence that anything in particular helps. If you know that certain food trigger attacks for you then you should avoid them, but other than that there is no good evidence for dietary restrictions.

I have history of diverticulitis and wanted to know if its ok to take grapefruit seed extract daily as part of my diet to avoid another attack?

Assuming that: You had sigmoid diverticulitis, a high fiber diet is generally recommended. However, it is at best marginally effective especially in the short term. Grapefruit seed extract seems harmless enough to me, but you should consult with your doctor or gi specialist, just to make sure.

Need help with diet for diverticulitis and gallstones?

Need help with diet for diverticulitis and gallstones?

Will differ: Gallstones cause symptoms when they block the function of the gallbladder after eating fatty foods. Thus avoiding fatty foods like fried and high fat foods may be helpful. For diverticulitis, the blockage of diverticular sac openings is the root cause for inflammation. Avoiding constipation by eating more fiber and drinking more water, and to exercise more frequently.
