Decrease acid: Many of my patients with mouth sores drink or eat a lot of acidic foods or beverages. I have them stop drinking coffee, tea and sodas and stay away from oranges orange juice tomatoes or other acidic foods and drinks. I also have them rinse their mouths after each meal with maalox liquid. They also rinse their mouths before they go to bed. If this does not help see an ENT doctor for an evaluation. ...Read more

One idea: Do you perhaps have transient lingual papillitis? It's not cancer. Read about it. Check with your physician next time you visit and they are present. I hope you're able to stop chewing someday, but I'm very glad you're chewing rather than smoking. Best wishes. ...Read more

Not a cold sore: Cold sores occur on the outside of the mouth/borders of lips, not in the mouth and are caused by the herpes virus. Canker sores, which are not caused by the herpes virus occur in the mouth, and are typically painful. This could just be an enlarged tongue papilla, which is common and not a problem.
