Something else: If it 's not irritation (itching) then you probably have dermatillomania, which is just a fancy way of saying you obsessively pick at yourself. This is thought to be related to obsessive-compulsive disorder & may improve on an ssri antidepressant. Cognitive-behavioral therapy might also help. YES: When working with patients infected or otherwise, you need to follow universal precautions. If you have open sores on hands all the more reason to be careful. You could obtain infection and you could transmit infections too. See below: My best guess would be either an allergy to the medication or simply the release of histamine due to the medication. First, he needs to stop scratching, the sores will get infected. Get some otc Benadryl (diphenhydramine) or zyrtec (less sedating). Second, call his doctor to discuss this. He may need to try a different pain medication. ...Read more
