Soreness After A Chiropractic Adjustment
Short term: Chiropractic is based upon an outmoded theory proven to be wrong. Therefore they cannot diagnosis or cure. However they offer a deep massage which can relieve some degrees of back pain and soreness. Best to see your regular doctor first for a diagnosis and cure if possible. See the chiropractor as if you were visiting a massage therapist only. ...Read more
Seen chiropractor 10 times now for for lower left adjustment. Now Last 2 adjustments I feel a sore nerve left inside thigh and left testical at times.
L1 radiculopathy: The skin distribution you describe is covered by the ilioinguinal nerve which is a branch of the first lumbar root L1. Based on your hx of low back adjustment, your left L1 root may have gotten irritated either from a sudden nerve root repositioning or from a mechanical compression by the contents of your spine (disk bulge, osteophyte complex etc). mri L spine would show a new disk bulge. ...Read more
How do I know if I have damage from a chiropractic treatment, and not just normal muscle soreness?
Yes but it depends: Chiropractors can often help neck pain, but it depends on the cause of the neck pain and the type of chiropractor-some are much better than others. There are many different styles of chiropractic. I prefer those who use gentle techniques like direct non-force, network & activator. Besides medication, consider seeing an osteopath who does manipulation, massage therapy, physical therapy or acupuncture. ...Read more

Is it normal to feel very sore from the chiropractor after a couple of visits? I'm worried because I woke up last night head ache nausea and neck back
Why do it?: 23 yo female has "headache, nauseousness & neck pain" after chiropractic visit. This is concerning and a real medical doctor who is licensed to diagnose, which chiropractors are not, needs to evaluate these worrisome symptoms. There is no evidence that jerking on neck does anything efficacious, & it can be dangerous. I bet most medical doctors would never submit themselves to such hokus pokus. ...Read more

I have been experiencing aching pain from mid back, though hips, and down legs. Chiropractic isn't helping. What could this be?
We were hit in an accident. My 18 month old was doing fine overall. Chiropractor said he has some tender spots. Should we get him fixed at this age?
Depends on you: In my own experience of 3+ decades of pediatric practice I have never found any value in chiropractic care for kids. I do occasionally get testimonials from happy parents but no evidence based studies. If you're a chiro person do what you feel is right. The sessions may comfort you & your child will see your response & relax. Simple followup with your regular doctor is all I would do for my kid. ...Read more

Yes: This can happen after any manual manipulation. It doesn't mean anything was necessarily wrong with the adjustment, but it could have caused a muscle spasm that leads to a headache. If you notice any other symptoms, like slurring of words or one sided weakness, see a physician immediately. Can chiropractic neck "cracking" adjustment reduce dizziness caused by cervical foraminal stenosis?
Not recommended: Neck cracking done as "head thrusts" is considered potentially unsafe and should be avoided. The academy of neurology has come out against this procedure due to high risks of artery dissection and fatal stroke which can occur. I have seen 3 cases of these consequences while in training. I advise all my patients to reconsider doing such maneuvers. Risks vs. Benefits ratio unacceptably high. ...Read more

Do not adjust bite!: This is typical TMJ inflammation. Treatment usually includes use of an analgesic (NSAID) and reduced mandibular function. An occasional injection of corticosteroid into or around the TMJ may reduce inflammation and pain.
