Have the worst sore throat of my life, started 12 hrs ago. Temp 99.5. am I safe waiting this out just for 24hrs or so to see if it improves?
Most of the time...: The first few days of an upper respiratory tract infection, including a throat infection, it is wise to wait and just rest and drink plenty of fluids along with analgesics for pain. However, if these symptoms last more than a week, you start feeling progressively worse, or cannot hold anything down (even fluids) then it is time to visit your doctor. ...Read more

Needs evaluation: I'm sorry to say but you need to get this seen by a doctor -since you don't want to neglect something like Strep throat. There might be clues -such as if anyone else in the household was diagnosed with Strep? Certainly a virus is possible, but without a throat culture and proper evaluation, you're guessing. For now, hot drinks, rest, tylenol (acetaminophen) for symptoms. I make a hot honey-lemon drink with ginger ...Read more
Just flew back from cancun Sat and I have the worst sore throat I have ever had, ever. Super swollen glands both sides and incredibly sore to swallow.
Something infectious: Mono is from the EBV virus, and can cause swollen glands (lymph nodes) and big tonsils. Strep throat can do the same thing, but Strep throat needs antibiotics. Some other infections can cause big lymph nodes. More rarely, blood disorders and blood cancers cause swollen lymph nodes and fatigue (person often gets anemic). This all means that a trip to the doctor would be wise. ...Read more
Can you have strep throat without a fever? And possibly an ear infection as well? Worst sore throat ever for 4 days now and ear pain but no fever?
Yes: You may have strep throat without fever. Can be very difficult to swallow, so bad you can't swallow your own saliva. A simple swab test can diagnose or exclude strep throat in a very short time, and you can then initiate antibiotic therapy. If you do have strep throat, you are contagious until you've been on treatment for at least 24 hrs. Get seen soon. Good luck. ...Read more
I have a sore throat, headache, body aches, cough, ear ache, nausea and my neck hurts. The sore throat is the worst part. Even though I have a cough, could it be strep throat or is it a virus that will pass through?
URI: It is likely an upper respiratory infection with those constellation of symptoms. There is a remote possibility of strep but antibiotics are minimally help strep throat, they are only given to reduce the incidence of rheumatic fever and that depends on where you live and your ethnicity and socioeconomic status. See your Dr. If you are concerned. ...Read more

Days 2, 3, 4: Headache and throat symptoms can be from flu/cold viruses, strep throat, allergies, etc., except that allergies usually don't cause a fever. Doctors have rapid 5-minute tests for strep, so a primary care doctor can diagnose strep and start antibiotics "right away", which means within the first 3 days of a strep throat infection. Doctors also have a 15-minute test for Flu A and Flu B. ...Read more

No effect of penicilin after 3 days. Bad sore throat, difficulty swalloing, ear ache, head ache, swelling under ear. Pain gets worst in night. No fever?
Give it time: We know true strep is universally sensitive (killed) by penicillin, but the tissue disruption/pain triggered by infection may take time to improve. You can also have a co-infection with a throat virus (like mono) which can produce some of the most painful soar throats. If your doc treated you without confirming the strep, a virus may be the main cause and the penicillin would do nothing. ...Read more
I am experiencing sore throat headache throbbing sensation fever pain when swallowing. Doc said its Pharyngitis gave me Azithromycin but its worst now?
Probably viral: Pharyngitis usually is a viral infection, and viruses do not respond to antibiotics. Your doctor probably prescribed azithromycin in case it's strep, but if not, it's not surprising your symptoms are continuing and even getting worse. Check back with your doctor, but probably you'll just have to wait it out. Aspirin or ibuprofen (or related meds) may help control pain. Good luck! ...Read more

Control nose: The sinus and ear infections are most likely from obstruction of their openings from the allergic rhinitis. The most important step is to decongest the nose (nasal steroid) so that these organs can drain. Just antibiotic alone will not likely provide long-term relief. See an allergist if this has been a recurrent problem. ...Read more
