Strep or cold? Symptoms: sore throat 5 days, ear pressure, sinus headache, cough today and yesterday. Fever for 3 days.

Needs diagnosis: The only 'definitive' way to tell is by obtaining the right testing - and in this case, a throat culture would determine if you had Strep or not. Since you have fever and ongoing symptoms, I strongly encourage you to get tested - this will help shape the treatment plan, and lead to your improvement. In the meantime, chicken soup (or pho), plenty of rest and ibuprofen for symptoms may help. ...Read more

Sore throat for 7 days, no fever, no rash, headache, mouth pain. Strep throat? Hiv? Started zithromax today.

Zithromax ?: One further comment on the use of zithromax for upper respiratory tract infections. In 2000, a study of antibiotic efficacy for acute bacterial sinusitis demonstrated that azythromycin (zithromax) has no effect against nthi (non-typable hemophilus influenza). It is a very appropriate drug for some cases of lower respiratory infections. H.Flu is a very common cause of ear and sinus infections. ...Read more

Sick for about 4 days. Sore throat, productive cough, congestion, face is sore, no fever, mild earache but now my neck is swollen and sore. Seeadoc?
That's a good idea.: For significant sore throat with swollen tonsils / lymph nodes – see physician ; get a strep throat test/ culture. If you have strep throat, antibiotic therapy is imperative to prevent future complications. Consider tylenol (acetaminophen) or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications. Saltwater gargles: mix 1 tsp salt in 8 oz warm water – gargle several times a day. Or gargle with aloe vera juice twice a day. ...Read more

Sore throat, headache, fatigue, & malaise x3 wks. Sore throat has lingered for 4-4.5 wks. No fevers. Neg throat culture & mono test. Causes?
Posibilities: My first thought would focus on the nasal airway. If you have allergies/irritants/sinus swelling that narrows the nasal airway your mouth breathing during sleep will cause a sore throat. This can be aggravated in an environment like a heated house, because low humidity adds to the problem. A humidifier and generous use of nasal saline may give you some relief. ...Read more

Fever, headache, sore legs, rash (told viral) for 3 days. Then cough only for 2 days. Now back to fever, headache and sore legs. Still viral?

Hard to determine : Without seeing the rash and examining you, it's really tough to say whether viral. Chances are it is, as over 80% of these type scenarios are indeed viral. However, there are bacterial and ricketsial diseases that can do what you describe as well. Since you're not improving, it may be time to get reassessed and maybe even some lab work to see if this still fits the "just a virus" category. ...Read more

"unlisted" virus: Ok, it is not one of the more common, "testable" infections. So it is one of the thousands of "cold" viruses or other infections that is not routinely tested for. Your symptoms should be managed and if not improving in 2-4 days, should get re-checked to be sure do not need an antibiotic, steroid, or other intervention. Hydrate, rest, and treat symptoms in mean time. ...Read more

Took amoxicillin 3 times now in 6 months 10 day 500mg for sore throat and fever tonsils swollen throat swab neg though what is going on no cough ?

Virus? Allergy?: Probably these were not bacterial infections but viral, or perhaps an allergy problem. Except for strep, which apparently was negative by swab, few bacterial infections do this. No antibiotic, including amoxicillin, has any effect on viral infections or allergies. Keep working with your doctor, or perhaps see otolaryngologist (ENT) or allergy specialist. ...Read more
