Mouth Sores (Definition)

A canker sore is a painful, open sore in the mouth. Canker sores are white or yellow and surrounded by a bright red area. They are benign (not cancer). Canker sores can run in families. What's going on? Sore throat swollen roof of my mouth

Maybe strep, flu, etc.: Nose and throat symptoms can be from cold viruses, strep throat, allergies, etc... It can be difficult to tell what the cause is. If symptoms only last 1-2 days, it was likely allergies, irritation, or a mild cold. Doctors have rapid 5-minute tests for strep, so a primary care doctor can diagnose strep and start antibiotics "right away", which means within the first 3 days of strep symptoms. ...Read more

I was around someone that has atypical measles. I have a sore throat, the roof of my mouth is sore, and a sore by hinge of jaw. Should I worry?

Get checked out: Some of your symptoms are common to upper respiratory viral illnesses, and I am unclear about the "sore, " whether this is on the skin or in the deeper tissue. Either way, with the increase in measles outbreaks, a positive exposure, and some associated symptoms, it is advisable that you see your doc to look into this further. Take care of yourself! Good luck! ...Read more

What could a small, itchy, and sore bump on the roof of my mouth towards the back be? My allergies have been really bad lately too, if that helps.

What could a small, itchy, and sore bump on the roof of my mouth towards the back be? My allergies have been really bad lately too, if that helps.

Allergies vs. Virus: Considering your allergies have been acting up, that sore bump could easily be an area of allergic inflammation on the soft palate. It could also be part of a mild viral infection that's affecting your throat and palate. I recommend considering allergy treatment with an antihistamine like Zyrtec, (cetirizine) while rinsing with warm salt water twice daily. Give it a week and it should be better! ...Read more
