Perhaps: Strep throat, mononucleosis, or other viruses. For significantly sore throat w swollen tonsils / lymph nodes – see physician & get a strep throat test & culture. Antibiotics are imperative for Strep Throat. Try saltwater gargles. Mix tsp of salt in 8 oz of warm water – gargle w this several times/day. Started with cold sore on cheek, sore on roof of month, feel like sores in throat now painful red dots on tip of my tongue.
Could be serious: This sounds like an innocent disease called herpangina from a virus that mostly affects children. And it is possible you have it, if you are exposed to children. However, you are 62. At this age some other more serious things could be happening and I would urge you to see a clinician soon. Meanwhile for comfort you can use warm salt water gargles and Tylenol. Viral likely: Most likely this is a viral throat infection which usually runs its course in several days without specific treatment except gargling with warm salt water. The tongue bumps are probably reactive glands. Taste buds: Likely what you are noticing are your taste buds and possibly some lymph gland tissue (tonsil ) which is normally there.
