Probably: Radiographs are not a crystal ball... they don't disclose everything. Did your dentist check to see if the tooth was vital (alive)? Swelling may be from a periodontal issue, so yes, in that case root canal may not be needed. More info necessary to make a proper diagnosis. Have your dentist re-examine you or refer you to an endodontist if s/he can't determine the cause of your swelling. ...Read more

Get Checked: See the Dentist and get checked. It may be normal healing response depending on the complexity of the problem. If still not resolved after the course of antibiotics, then additional treatment may be required. Often it takes months for the discomfort from pressure to subside, but tissue should resolve once infection clears up. Good Luck. ...Read more

Was diagnosed with a gum boil, is it really needed to ectract the tooth or a root canal may do?

Was diagnosed with a gum boil, is it really needed to ectract the tooth or a root canal may do?

RCT or EXT?: Whether to do RCT or extract the tooth depends upon many factors. Unfortunately that is not something we can evaluate over the internet without actually seeing the tooth and an x-ray. If the infection is too large, if there is not enough sound tooth structure or if the tooth has severe bone loss, you will lose the tooth anyway even if RCT done. Trust your dentist or get a 2nd opinion. ...Read more

Was wondering if your gum can become infected because a filling chipped, can it cause a root canal?

Was wondering if your gum can become infected because a filling chipped, can it cause a root canal?

By itself, no: You can develop an infection in the gums if food debris is left between the tooth and the gums, allowing bacteria to grow and use the food as a food source. Your gums can also seem infected as a result of an abscess of a tooth that has found a way through the bone and gums and causes swelling at the exit portal. By itself, a chipped tooth won't cause gum infection. ...Read more

I had a 2nd root canal performed yesterday after an abcess was diagnosed. Is it normal to still have pus on my gum after the procedure?

Keep an eye on it: Unfortunately, root canal treatments can have recurring infections for several reasons. What is important, in my opinion, is to resolve the infection prior to completing the root canal therapy. If it was completed in the presence of active infection, you will need to monitor it closely. If taking antibiotics, the pus should resolve, but could still return later. Pus never really is normal. ...Read more
