In 2011 had decay on molar under crown so root canal/crown. Now tender submand gland + 4 gum on that side, tooth sore after grinding. Whom do I see?
Had terrible toothache in upper left tooth. Pain went away after three days. X-rays-no root canal needed. Gums sore and cheek puffy. Root canal needed?
Probably: Radiographs are not a crystal ball... they don't disclose everything. Did your dentist check to see if the tooth was vital (alive)? Swelling may be from a periodontal issue, so yes, in that case root canal may not be needed. More info necessary to make a proper diagnosis. Have your dentist re-examine you or refer you to an endodontist if s/he can't determine the cause of your swelling. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Get Checked: See the Dentist and get checked. It may be normal healing response depending on the complexity of the problem. RCT or EXT?: Whether to do RCT or extract the tooth depends upon many factors. Unfortunately that is not something we can evaluate over the internet without actually seeing the tooth and an x-ray. If the infection is too large, if there is not enough sound tooth structure or if the tooth has severe bone loss, you will lose the tooth anyway even if RCT done. Trust your dentist or get a 2nd opinion. ...Read moreSee 3 more doctor answers
Was wondering if your gum can become infected because a filling chipped, can it cause a root canal?
By itself, no: You can develop an infection in the gums if food debris is left between the tooth and the gums, allowing bacteria to grow and use the food as a food source. Your gums can also seem infected as a result of an abscess of a tooth that has found a way through the bone and gums and causes swelling at the exit portal.
